THE WHITE VAN MAN (PART 3)

2020.10.26 02:14 Pristine-Engine4388 THE WHITE VAN MAN (PART 3)

I wasn’t sure if what he had said had really gotten through to my traumatized mind so I jumped in and interrupted.
'MEN?!!? PEOPLE?!' I shouted before not letting him get a response in before going off on a tangent.
'NO, ITS JUST ONE GUY, HE SAID HE NAME WAS DAVE, HE TRIED TO TAKE ME LAST WEEK AND NOW HE CAME BACK TO FINISH THE JOB! BUT HE TOOK JESS INSTEAD AND ITS ALL MY FAULT. PLEASE YOU HAVE TO FIND HIM AND GET HER BACK! PLEASE!' I started to get frustrated, Time was running out and we didn’t have time to spare. In all honestly, I felt like I was responsible for not telling my parents about ‘Dave’ in the first place.
Agent Johnson held his hand up dismissively to calm my outburst and made sure I was listening before he continued.
'The man you described..’ He sighed in what felt like a bit of shame.
‘His name isn’t 'Dave' .. His name is Damian Ramsey...’ He took another paused and sighed again as if trying to find the words.
‘He is a criminal informant of the bureau' His gaze met the floor.
Our eyes all widened, this was getting more and more bizarre. My mum went ballistic as you can imagine. Saying that this man tried to force his way into our home last week, to do god knows what to me and now we find he works for the FBI! She was appalled and outraged but my father managed to settled her down. He as well as everyone else wanted to know more.
The agent waited for the room to settle again before he continued. 'He was a part of the gang we are investigating. They are known as 'The Swarm'.
I couldn’t help but think back to the butterfly symbol. A knot tightened in my gut.
‘They are a ruthless clandestine network of human traffickers who responsible for a large percentage of violent crime all over the country. Kidnappings, Child Abductions, Murders, Torture, Extortion, Blackmail.. you name it.'
He sighed once again and took on a defeated look the more he delved in on the subject. ‘They have kidnapped over 700 people some as young as 18 month, and that is just what we know of. The victims mainly are traded, for large amounts of money, to some of the sickest people on the planet. The ones who cant be sold are often traded into prostitution or modern day slavery. In some of the more high profile cases, They have slaughtered entire families if their target couldn’t be taken quietly, like Jessica this evening.’
I, along with everyone else, listening with pure disgust. I really thought it was bad Jessica being taken by this Ramsey character. But oh my god, this was becoming so much worse.
The agent spoke again.
‘This monsters don’t stop there. Some people are taken and are made into torture or snuff videos to be sold on the black market.’ ‘or if its a kid from a rich family they even use these horrific methods to extort ransom money from the victims family.’
Jessica’s mum gasped and a little more of her soul left her body as her imagination tortured her already fragile mind.
'So what was this Ramsey character doing trying to assault my daughter if he’s a government asset!' my mum blurted out in a rage.
'Ramsey was what we call a 'spotter' for The Swarm. He would identify and stalk potential targets that seemed lucrative. ya know the types? Home-aloners, Tear-aways, Run-aways. These types would be trafficked and he also knew people who scout for Rich Families to extort and blackmail by threatening their loved ones. Ramsey, himself was mainly part of the trafficking side of the operation. He told us the Gang would scout kids they could potentially take, obtain photographs to advertise the target on the black market and secret online forums. If these adverts met a Buyers specific 'tastes'...’ They way he said that made the parents in the room recoil with nausea.
‘This buyer would then offer to pay an obscene amount of money to the gang on delivery of the Target.’
‘And believe me it gets worse...with Ramsey’s information, we have discovered that these buyers aren’t what or who you’d think they’d be.’ He bit his bottom lip and clasped his hands together as if anticipating the impact of what he was going to say next.
‘They aren’t mentally disturbed sex offenders. Most of the time the Buyers are god damn CEOs, Judges, Senators, Politicians.. Jesus we even have some circumstantial evidence some high ranking cops are involved. We believe this organised group have direct links to some of the countries most rich and powerful elite. This is why this investigation is top secret and any links to it at all have to be kept internal. We have assets in the field who we need to keep safe’
We couldn’t believe how dark this was turning. I could tell everyone was having a hard time grasping the reality of it all.
'Most of the members of the group tend to be extremely violent and all of the high ranking ones have a lot of sociopathic tendencies but ultimately together they are a well organised unit, who will do anything to further there interests. However, Ramsey.. well.. he was different. He didn’t care about the money or the power. That sick bastard had a 'taste' for the young ones himself. He often used his line of work to ‘satisfy’ his twisted needs. This eventually got him in some personal trouble with the law. He was arrested on suspicion of the rape and murder of a 5 year old boy in Atlanta a few years back..’
‘Oh boy, We had DNA evidence, Damning CCTV footage. We had that bastard dead to rights, literally. Georgia has the death penalty'. He said this like a soccer player who had just missed a last minute penalty.
Agent Johnson contempt for the man started to show as he continued with the story.
'We were literally about the charge him when he got this-this smug look on his face. That stupid face of his! He turned and says to me with this real superficial arrogance, that made me want to snap his neck right then and then..’
I knew the tone of voice he was talking about. So assured. Like he was invincible.
Agent Johnson did his best to replicate Ramsey’s broad Georgia accent. 'Now you just what a cotton picking minute their agent, Now what if I could give you the biggest win of your pathetic career? Who cares about one little toddler who lets face it, was begging for what he got anyway? I could make you the biggest cat in the alley Agent Johnson'
When Johnson finished, he almost took on the look of Jessica’s. He looked defeated. He'd sold out this little boy who suffered horribly at the hands of this animal but a few cheap wins. A few bad apples had faced charges but the tree so to speak was still standing. The Swarm were still out there. Ruining peoples lives.
'We agreed to drop the charges in regards to the child, in return for his co-operation and information that aided our ongoing investigation into this organised crime syndicate. In our defence, he gave a lot of information on the gangs methods. Sites they used on the deep web, places they would trade their 'livestock' as he called them, high profile buyers etc. We are a lot more aware of there presence than we were 3 years ago. We were able to solve a lot of cold cases thanks to his insights. He knew dates, places, people, numbers, sites, accomplices... he was a god damn gold mine and 100% untouchable and the son of a bitch knew it! He never told us everything. He always held stuff back as insurance for him against future convictions.’
His gaze met mine when he said that last sentence. I now understood why he was so bold with me that day. He never once looked as if being caught bothered him.
‘Ramsey went on to secure a WITSEC agreement and we moved him to this area, safe house, immunity, new identity, the works. But we've come to learn tonight that when it comes to the people who we are dealing with here - There ain’t no such thing as Immunity.'
At the time, I wasn’t sure what that last comment meant so but the agent continued before I could ask what he was talking about.
'We've had multiple reports on his behaviour since he became a CI. Just minor stuff up until today. Public Indecency, Assault, Drug Charges etc. However, any police reports or enquiries on him automatically set off a federal trip wire and the files become immediately encrypted to anyone except the bureau. This is to protect his identity and our investigation.’
Agent Rodriquez piped up for the first time, rising from his seat at our dining room table with a blue folder in his hand, stamped ‘CLASSIFIED’ in contrasting blood red ink. 'We first became aware of tonights events earlier today. A police report that was filed by a neighbour on the adjacent street. He reported a man matching Ramsey’s description being dragged into the side door of white ford transit earlier today by two men dressed in all black. With, what he described as ‘creepy ass’ Easter Bunny masks.'
Agent Rodriguez backed up the FBIs theory by pulling out a photo from the blue file to show the adults in the room. Greg, after receiving a non verbal que from Johnson, distracted me when this was happening by asking me for help with his Iphone. I knew it was some bullshit made up issue but I helped him anyway. I knew now that what was being shown was bad. The image whatever it was made Jessica’s mum break again into a sobbing shriek.
After placing the photo away and closing the folder, he continued giving the account of the neighbours police report on Ramseys kidnapping.
'He said the van had been lingering in the area with the engine running and the neighbour thought it looked suspicious as he'd seen it keep popping up in the area over the past week but no one ever got out or in and there was no roadworks going on in the area at the time to explain it. We believe Karma...and The Swarm, finally caught up with Ramsey. We’re not sure if they came here to find Ramsey and found Olivia, or if they came to take Olivia and caught Ramsey. Either way he belongs to them now. I’d have sympathy for the guy but maybe now that kid in Atlanta finally has some Justice.'
Rodriquez already realised that last comment likely wouldn’t go down well with Jessica’s parents and I noticed he was deliberately maintaining eye contact with Agent Johnson.
Incase you are wondering. I asked my mum about the photograph they were shown. My mum told me a few days after this event that the photo was a screenshot from a video found on a memory stick, that was delivered to a wealthy families home two years ago. It had taken into evidence during a high profile kidnapping of two young kids. The image was horrifying. It showed two terrified 6 year olds, sat on a couch with black tape across their mouths. In between the two kids sat a man in all black clothes with his arms around the two boys in a non threatening way. She said it would be just like my father would put his arms me and my mum in our family photos. But the man wore a mask. A Pink Easter Bunny mask. The ears pointed straight up and flopped over just before the top. Totally Regular But it was the the eyes. They were made to look pure evil. They were the type of eyes that drain all sense of safety away from you when you look into them. A threatening, horrifying glare, that my mum said she still sees from the shadows of her bedroom when she tries to sleep at night. In front of the couch was a table. On the table there was an array of tools. Screwdrivers, Drills, Scalpels, Plyers, Bolt-cutters. My mum continued to go into gut wrenching detail about the wounds the kids had before I asked her to stop and she gladfully obliged. we hugged and said we loved each other again. We do that a lot these days.
Agent Johnson continued his story but I noticed Agent Rodriguez received a call that he'd clearly been waiting for, He answered it with haste and left the room.
I had a question. ‘When Da- I mean Ramsey, When Ramsey was trying to get me into my house. He get spooked by a drawing on our drive. I saw you two looking at it earlier. What is it?’ I asked.
Agent Johnson closed his eyes and nodded his head as if to signal he was just about to explain that before I interrupted him.
'The symbol at the bottom of your drive is the gangs brand marking. The symbol is a butterfly. In the world of child sex trading it symbolises that a buyer is in to very young girls. With this being the gangs niche we can only assume this is the origin of the symbol. Hence ‘The Swarm’. We tend to find this symbol branded onto the victims body a lot.'
'BRANDED? like with a hot iron??' Jessica’s Dad piped up He immediately wished he hadn't because as Agent Johnson reluctantly nodded, Jessica’s mum spirit broke, again.
'Our working hypothesis is that the gang came to town for business or to look for Ramsey. Whilst here maybe Olivia caught someones eye. Walks home alone to an empty house. She looks young for her age. All the stuff that makes these sickos see Dollar Signs. They would have obtained a photo or video then advertised it on a buyers forum on the hidden web or black market these gangs use. They will have received an offer from a buyer so then they set up the snatch. They will have been watching the Matthews house for a few days after to figure out your work schedules, neighbour shedules etc. Finding the best time to strike. When everything is set up and a date is set, this is when they spray the symbol on the drive of the house. This is to signal to the 'snatchers' which is the house of the target. They use yellow so it can be easily seen in the dark. In rare cases its also to claim the target too. Warn off other interested parties and avoid conflicts of ownership with a rival outfit. Not many guys like to piss off The Swarm though.'
I didn’t doubt that for one second.
'We believe the snatchers were there to take Olivia that day when Ramsey was trying to get into your house. They must have spotted him and waited for him to take you inside, Where they could have nailed two birds with one stone. But, he noticed the symbol and when he fled the scene after realising the gang could be watching, The stupid son of a bitch walked right into their grasp.'
Agent Johnson despite knowing his best source of information into the gang was now likely being branded with 256 degree hot metal and being mutilated with sharp tools by a bunch a psychotic easter bunnies, he couldn’t help but replicate the expression of satisfaction Rodriguez had displayed earlier when they thought of the horrific things Ramsey was having done to him for betraying The Swarm. I could tell he really felt better for the boy Ramsey killed in Atlanta. His current situation now gave him a bit of peace. What goes around, truly does come back around.
Agent Rodriguez re-entered the room and blurted 'WERE ON! I'm heading down now, I'll check in soon with a status update. Looks like we don’t need Ramsey after all. We could get these guys tonight!' He gave this with a slight head nod full of positivity. I couldn’t help feel my hopes to see Jessica alive again flutter upwards for the first time all night. I looked at the clock. we had around 15 mins before the deadline to trade me for Jess was up. 'So what happens now, what are you doing to get my Jess back?!?!' Jessica’s mum erupted after pulling herself together. 'Well we've been trying to trace the Cell number the gang called on to try locate Jessica but its taking a little longer than anticipated, However our surveillance team have been in position at the warehouse where The caller told us the switch would go down. 2 minutes ago a white van, matching the description of your statement, pulled up. We are just waiting for the golden approval from our Strategic Firearms Commander to move in and take down the men at the drop. We need the order in case we need to use lethal force. Rodriguez is on his way down now so If they’ve brought Jessica to the meet, we will have her back home soon I promise you guys!'
I could tell he was trying to convince himself as much as he was anyone else. Something really didn’t feel right to me. When me and my mum talked this night over a few days later, she told me she’d had the exact same worry. This gang have evaded capture for years and sounded as if they have the local police networks potentially in their pocket. There was no way arresting them and getting Jessica back was going to be as simple as they made out.
The silence and tension in the room was killing me, so I asked Agent Johnson a question in private, that I really wished I’d kept to myself. 'What is so special about me Agent? Me and Jessica are always being mistook for the other. People say we are like twins. Why are they so desperate to trade me for her? What’s the difference?' I know it was a selfish question on the bare face of it but I was genuinely curious at this point.
He looked at my mum for approval to answer honestly. She nodded. 'Yes, the fact you and Jessica look alike meant they grabbed her instead of you in the dark. They wouldn’t have known she was in the house as you entered through the back garden today according to your initial statement. On the recording the Man said that they presented the buyer with a video of Jess after the mix up but he said she looked too old and was ‘too much on the bigger side’. He wanted you because you looked 'Ripe' and wore the Pigtails well. It had to be you... or no deal.'
I felt sick.
My mum shot a look at Agent Johnson to scold him for being a little too honest with the called wording of things. Agent Johnson did his best to pull back his error in judgement by adding that likely if I was the one to go down stairs and they tried to take me then they may have killed Jess to make sure there was no loose ends. He added that if I was the one to be taken I would be being traded as we speak and there’d be no opportunity to save me like we have with Jessica. I could tell he wasn’t the best when dealing with younger people so I humoured him and acted as if I was seeing the bright side of the situation. I could tell her felt better.
We smiled at each other. I could tell he felt as if he’d done good. I think and still to this day think Agent Johnson was a good man deep down. Our brief lighthearted moment was blown apart by Agent Johnsons Radio Handset Crackling to Life.
'AGENTS DOWN, I REPEAT AGENTS ARE DOWN, STATUS ZERO!, THERE DEAD, THERE ALL DEAD!, I REPEAT STATUS ZERO!'
Everyone in the house, just dropped what they were doing and focused on the harrowing dialogue coming through the device in Agent Johnsons trembling hand. He tried to remain calm for our benefits.
'Rodriguez, what is happening ?? where are the targets ?? Where is the girl?!' The 5 seconds of silence felt like hours as we all crowded round awaiting the news.
'Its a god damn massacre Johnson! The van, It was a god damn diversion! There’s 4 bodies here! two in the front seat of the surveillance van and the vehicle is on fire! Its blown to shit!'
He took a moment to cough the smoke out of his lungs before he finished the update.
'The other two are laying face down in the dirt by van tire marks. Oh my god their throats have been slit wide open! Jesus its a god damn blood bath, Bill! Jesus Christ, there’s no pulse!'
Judging by Agent Johnsons facial expressions, He came to a horrific realisation.
'4 bodies?!.. There was a team of 5?! Where’s the fifth man?!?!'
‘Oh god damn! Daniels!!? Agent Daniels, If you’re here make yourself know Agent - THATS AN ORDER!!’ Both agents tones were panicky, desperate and short of breath. For the first time tonight, I feel the two men finally truly empathized with what Jessicas parents were feeling.
Now I’m older I have my own theory about what happened to the surveillance team that night outside that warehouse. I imagine the gang had no intentions of making a trade and Jess was never with them. They wanted to lure me to the site under the false sense of security being under FBI escort. They likely had a unit already in place to take out anyone at the meet and they would take me by force whilst tying up a lot of loose ends at the same time. Agent Johnson did in fact say it would be there sort of MO. I believe the gang had seen the surveillance team park up. When the time was right they Drove the van in the middle of the dirt road outside the warehouse as a Diversion. I think a group of men armed with weapons lay in wait in the vehicle. Once the FBI got the golden approval from the SFC, the 3 armed agents got out the FBI vehicle and approached the Van with guns drawn. Maybe at this time another group of Swarm members attacked the Vehicle with a Molatov cocktail or Grenade. The hot explosion, and the sound of their colleagues screaming in agony pulling at their burning skin and clothes, caused the men approaching the van to turn their back on it. This gave the group in the van a chance to jump out and kill 2 of the 3 Federal agents and Kidnap the other.
I guess we will never know what truly happened but after 5 years of going over it in my head, that’s the most plausible scenario I can think of.
There was maybe an hour or so that passed by since the Incident. Mainly filled by Jessica’s mum screaming at the agents, wailing and shrieking where her little girl was and what they were doing to get her back.
Agent Johnsons superior called him to lose his shit and asked him what on earth possessed two decorated agents to send a team of just 5 people to take down the most dangerous organised crime group in north America.
He attempted to justify his actions by saying too many agents may have got them detected by the gang and cost them their chance of taking them down and saving Jessica.
I would have felt bad for the guy, if not trying to pull my head out of oblivion. The realisation that I am likely never going to see my best friend again was a blow I wasn’t ready for.
When people ask me what the darkest time of my life was. It was this hour. The time between learning our last hope to get my friend back was gone, and awaiting to hear what had become of a hardworking agent, who was just doing his job. And, of course my best friend who had never done anything other than be nice to everyone she'd ever met. The anxiety and dread pulled my insides into knots they I never thought could be undone.
And then, our landline phone rung.
The same process as before with the tech guys setting up the recording and listening devices whilst once again attempting to trace the call. Only this time Agent Johnson picked up the phone.
'Where is my Agent? You hand them BOTH over now and we can talk about a deal. You hurt either one of them and I will pursue you to full extent of my ability with the entire backing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation!' The only headset was being worn by one of the FBIs Profilers. So Agent Rodriquez hit the speaker button so he could hear the mans words and what he was saying about the missing Agent. I look back now and wish he hadn’t done that. What I heard over the next 7 minutes is forever burned into my head.
A drawn out Virginian accent came over the speaker. 'Now come on Agent, You've been doing that for 3 years now. And your still seen as a failure in your department and we are still going strong. Not even that little Rat you had working for ya could help you.’
‘You give me back your agent you sick bastards!’ Johnson snapped.
A clown like cackle burst from the speaker. ‘Well ain’t that cute! you allowed a child being raped and murdered to go unpunished. Just so you could further your investigations. And you call us the monsters?! Typical Lawman.' I couldn’t help Sympathise as I could tell this struck Agent Johnsons nerves. In a sense the Man was right. Its hard to defend the hypocrisy of the justice system at times. Johnson traded the life of the boy Ramsey killed for a tick in the win column in this investigation. I knew Agent Johnson had been haunted by what he did for a long time. He barely had a comeback.
'Besides we're way past making deals. We gave you a chance to make a deal. Girl for the Girl and you tried to trap us. So now your going to feel the consequences of your actions.'
The man took a pause and said something that made all our hearts wrench. 'And then we're going come get the one we want. Whatever means necessary. We're done pussyfooting around and we got a lot riding on that little girl you got there' My mum and dad held me as if to give me some sort of feeling of being safe. Jessica’s mum looked at us and I swear I saw her look for Jessica to give her the same reassuring hug. For the 10th today I saw her spirit break that little bit more. Another pause and a few inaudible noises before we heard the agonized screams of a man. The agent. But there was something about his groans of pain. 'Daniels?! Daniels Its Johnson. Shout out anything that can help us locate you! What do you see?! Give me something!' 'Oh he won't be able to do that unfortunately. you see, we thought you might try something like that, being a crafty fed and everything, so we ripped his tongue out.' He said that with a coldness that had a lot of us taken back. You could see that broke Agent Johnson. Knowing his judgement and decisions had this man in this situation. A family man with 2 kids, who should be home right now, watching the Lakers take on the Raptors in the playoffs with a cold beer. Right before he tucks his kids in goodnight after a day of fighting the bad guys of the world. Instead he is being held against his will. Being beaten, tortured and mutilated.
'Don't worry though, Agent. Things will stop being cut and ripped off this gentleman, if he just writes down on this paper what we want to know.'
We all looked at Agent Johnson before my Dad asked 'What is he talking about?' 'THAT IS GOD DAMN CLASSIFIED' he snapped.
'Of course 'BILL'...' The use of Agent Johnsons first name visibly startled him. The man continued. ‘Of course you could put your man out of a lot of misery and suffering. If you just give me the name that I want. You have my word Lawman, I’ll put a bullet in him right now. No more games. But if you don't...’
He took a deliberate pause.
‘Well lets just say he’s got ten toes and 5 fingers he doesn’t need to write. And if needs must there’s two rows of pearly whites here to play with'
'I AM NOT HANDING OVER ANOTHER INNOCENT FOR YOU PSYCHOS TO JUST BUTCHER!' Agent Johnson exploded. His eyes now glazed over with tears of torment.
There was another horrific 5 second pause before the man took a deep inhale though his nose.
'Fair does Bill, Fair does. Have it your way.'
The dull drawn out shrieks of Agent Daniels tongueless mouth screeched though our landline as he was dragged off out of the audio range of the call.
It was hard to tell with no pronunciation but we were all pretty sure he was screaming the words 'Please' and 'No'. We could tell his was sobbing too.
I didn’t think this night could get any worse.
The speaker projected the mans voice again.
‘Now then. Put Jessica’s mum on the phone please.'
We all gasped. Our Eyes widened and I felt my pupils dilating. There is no way this was going to be good. Jessica’s Mum took the receiver from Agent Johnson. She was already fighting back tears. These people did not care however.
She dived right in. 'Hello, Please.. Please just give me my little girl back. She’s a sweet little girl who hasn’t done anything wr-'
'MUMMY!!! MUMMYYYYY' Jessica’s voice interrupted her mothers feeble attempt at appealing to the kidnappers better nature. These people did not have one.
'Oh my god baby, Yes I am here. Every things going to be okay! I'm here and we are going to get you home I promise.'
The Man came back on the phone. 'Hello Mrs Adams. I need you to know that this isn’t anything personal. Its Just business.'
Scrap what I said earlier. THIS RIGHT HERE. This was the worst moment of my life. This was when we all knew.
'This isn’t the way I wanted it to go down. Honestly.’ He almost sounded sincere. ‘The FBI have stepped on our toes one too many times and they have made us very angry. A message needs to be sent. I hope you understand. Oh, please tell the Matthews family that we'll see them very soon. That debt is still owed. And we will collect.'
Jessica’s mum knew at this point what was to come. All she could do was to find the strength to try and comfort her little girl and be there for her in what was no doubt unimaginable hell for her.
The image of her shaken frame and tears bursting from her eyes will forever stay with me. To her credit she did her best to remain strong. Telling Jessica everything would be ok. She started to sing her the lullaby down the phone, from when Jess was 5 years old and under the weather. The song always made her feel better. Every kid has one their mum sings to them. I hope it gave Jess some sense of comfort in those last moments.
I think I'd have a lot more issues than I do now, had Agent Rodriquez not acted as quick as he did. He dived over the dinning room table to switch off the speaker phone just as the sound of an Electric drill revved to life and Jessica began to scream in abject terror.
We all watched Jessica’s mum attempt to hold herself together. Tears leaking for her eye sockets. Jessica’s father embraced her mother in a state I’d never seen him in before.
We all watched the last of her soul shatter as she sang 'Hush Little Baby, Don’t you cry' into the phone as Jessica screamed in pure agony for her mum and dad to come save her from the bad men.
She stayed with Jessica until the very end. We never heard another voice on the line after the screaming stopped. The phone went dead almost immediately after. Jessica’s mum collapsed when the caller hung up.
A unit arrived shortly after the call went dead. It was from the US Federal Witness Protection Programme. They gave us all new identities and relocated us out of the country. Apparently that was also part of the document we signed earlier. We weren’t safe anymore and needed to disappear. I cant give much more detail on this for obvious reasons. It was just our family that had to go missing. The FBI concluded it was unlikely The Swarm would come for them. They’d hurt them enough. We said our emotion packed goodbyes and offered what fatuous condolences we could muster. We packed our essential items in the 10 minutes we had before a black sedan came to collect us with a swat team escort sandwiching our ride. I watched my home for the last 13 years, fade away into the distance as Me and my parents embarked on our new life away from this nightmare.
Apparently whilst we were being removed from the country, the FBI finally traced the call made to our landline. It lead to a remote location way off the grid just outside of our town. The FBI and Evidence Response Team followed up to some old abandoned storage facility. There they found the remains of three bodies. Daniels, Ramsey and Jess. We were told one was totally dismembered. One was hanging by their neck from barbed wire attached to the roof support beams and the other had been dunked in boiling oil. They didn’t tell which was which but when Jessica’s Mum went to Identify her body, that was the final straw. She committed suicide the next day by overdosing on her prescription Diazepam. Her father is reportedly still alive but by all accounts he's turned to a life of Alcohol and Anti Depressants. Our handler says she doubts he'll see out the year at the rate he is going. It always hurts to hear the lasting damage of this horrendous event. I hope they find each other again some day.
Me and my family have settled now in our new home. We are making a go at a normal life but we will be forever moulded by that one night. I won’t walk anywhere alone. I have severe separation anxiety and its effected a lot of my romantic relationships. I can’t keep a boyfriend for longer than a month as I can’t talk to any of my boyfriends about my issues and where they stem from as its against my WITSEC agreement.
Our case handler says we are the luckiest people she’s ever met and we need to embrace this gift we have been given. We are the only family to ever be targeted by The Swarm and make it out alive. All the other families out there like me and my parents weren’t as fortunate. I doubt id use the words 'lucky' and ‘fortunate’ Our handler wasn't there that night listening to those people die in some dark dingy old building screaming for mercy. But at the same time, I do get where she is coming from.
I always read the online news articles for my old town and surrounding states to keep an eye on the alarming number of missing people cases. It’s horrifying. Mainly young girls too, who just vanish from their homes and neighbourhoods without a trace. The Swarm is responsible, I know it.
Even though, I am told I am safe now, and getting on with the rest of my life. I always find myself coming back to three things from that night.
The look of Jessica’s mums heart breaking as she sung her baby to sleep for the final time. A moment that haunts me on dark nights.
The last moment me and Jessica shared together before she was taken. That lingering warm smile we gave each other as she stood in my bedroom doorway. A treasure I truly hold dearly on those same dark nights.
And 3. The comment Agent Johnson quoted about Damon Ramsey in regards to his own WITSEC agreement from The Swarm....

  • The big stories this week really won’t hit until late in the issue, so read down I guess.
  • [NWA] The Midnight Rider angle lasted just a whole two weeks after his initial arrival. The whole thing began just four or five weeks back with a baseball bat and punching Magnum T.A., and all that work was wasted when they pulled the plug. The Midnight Rider gimmick just wasn’t working, so they did an official announcement that Paul Boesch convinced the NWA board to reinstate Dusty. All the panicked decisions lately leave Dave with the impression that the NWA is in worse shape than they seemed to be a few weeks back, and things don’t look likely to change any time soon. More of a surprise to Dave than the fact that it wasn’t working is the fact that they did it so quickly when the angle was supposed to last through the summer. He thinks that has to be hard on Dusty’s ego. So them setting up a feud between Dusty and Barry Windham when the logical feud should be Luger and Windham seems a desperate move to placate Dusty. And there’s no predicting what the NWA will do next, because the people in charge don’t seem to know what they’re doing week to week.
  • Ex-NFL star Steve Courson makes his pro wrestling debut this week at a Pennsylvania independent show. He’s barely trained and being rushed into the ring to capitalize off his NFL fame. The guy was a heavy steroid user back in the NFL and admitted as much, and his career ended due to health issues a couple years ago. Nevertheless, he’s got an anti-steroid book about to hit bookshelves. Seems carny enough for the business.
  • Roddy Piper showed up at Don Owen’s April 30 card in Portland. Billy Jack Haynes’ rival promotion debuted on May 7 and starts its tv program on May 14. Haynes claims he didn’t delay a week due to Piper’s April 30 appearance, but because his ring lights were late in arriving. They were lighting Chris Adams’ ring, I’m sure. Anyway, Piper showed up in the interview area and never entered the ring, and when Mike Golden told Piper to scram during his interview, Piper acted passive and backed off to help put Golden over. Golden then produced a contract for a match on May 7 and tried to goad Piper into a match, to which Piper retorted he’s lost a lot of weight and isn’t a fighter anymore, only to finally get into it with Golden after more taunting and Golden spitting on him. Fans left with the idea that Piper would fight Golden, but Piper never appeared on May 7 and no announcement of them having a match took place.
  • Variety Magazine reports that all the weekly pro wrestling shows have dropped out of the top 15 in syndicated ratings. So the real story is the way that the wrestling shows made it into the top 15 in the first page. The WWF network had 5 shows, Crockett network had 4, and All-Star Wrestling network had at least 6, and each of those packages added up the ratings of all the shows in them and reported that rating. Compare to say, Wheel of Fortune, which is just the one show, and so you had the combined ratings of anywhere from 4-6+ shows trying to act like all the shows in that package were competitive ad space to a show like Wheel or Jeopardy, which is unfair to those single shows that pull in massive ratings. Anyway, those who calculate ratings have done away with those network packages in their calculations to level the playing field, so WWF isn’t getting ahead of Oprah and her single show’s 9 rating by combining five shows to pull a 10 rating anymore. Superstars, which is definitely WWF’s most watched show, doesn’t even come close to the top 15 on its own. For Dave, this isn’t a big deal, other than that it’ll be harder to track ratings, which are the best way to measure interest at the moment. Dave’s tv industry contacts think this is a big blow to wrestling as an industry, however, and more damaging to Crockett than McMahon since Vince has sold most of his ad slots for the year already. Nothing has materially changed, but advertisers are going to see wrestling as less hot, and their places in the top 15 have been taken by shows like Love Connection, Star Search, and Hollywood Squares. A wrestling network package might offer the same number of viewers, but advertisers look at the rankings to decide what’s hot, and wrestling’s not going to appear there anymore, and their ads in trade publications won’t be able to boast WWF or NWA as among the highest rated networks in syndication. Long story short, Promoters are going to have to chase advertising dollars rather than advertisers chasing promotions, and that spells an eventual downturn for the business.
  • [NWA] Clash of the Champions II, called Miami Mayhem, has been announced for June 8. Dave gets the feeling that it won’t be as hot a show as the first Clash and that those in the company think they might have given away too much on the first and thus hurt themselves at the gate. Dave thinks they did indeed give a lot, but they also failed to take advantage of a lot. Like, the barbed wire match was the end of a feud and they didn’t even know it because despite the heels being beaten quick and clean, they’re still running the match when there’s no point in continuing the feud. Dave thinks they had a lot of momentum coming off the first clash and they squashed it by downplaying everything in favor of the now-aborted Midnight Rider angle.
  • Randy Savage is now being billed as Undisputed WWF Champion. They’ve dropped the word “heavyweight” and Dave’s been told they’re planning to no longer use it, for whatever that’s worth.
  • WWF is working on a bunch of non-wrestling specials. Kind of like the Slammy Awards in the way they’ll sell the shows and in their hopes for ratings. Dave hopes not similar in terms of quality, at least.
  • Managers Mr. Fuji, Jimmy Hart, and Frenchy Martin appeared on WWF’s May 7 Boston house show. No idea if it’s just certain New England cities they’ll appear in or what, but yeah, that’s the update on the managers at house shows thing.
  • Dave and his friends were joking that Ultimate Warrior vs. Andre the Giant would be the worst possible match this generation. Lo and behold, Dave found out that they put that match on a few weeks back in Switzerland on a European tour. Dave asks “What did the Swiss ever do to Vince McMahon?” I can't find anything from Switzerland, but I did find a clip from Italy on that same tour.
Watch: Andre vs. Warrior
  • Dave saw the program for the Central States April 28 show in Kansas City and it’s the funniest thing he’s seen in a while. The program talks about the Freebirds (supposed to be coming in) and says they’re managed by Michael Hayes, and it has a picture of Hayes taken from their original heel days in Georgia in 1980. Bob Geigel runs the promotion and makes his own programs, and it’s good to see how up to date he’s managed to be.
  • Ken Mantell sent a letter to every promotion except WWF and NWA offering for World Class to work with them. World Class isn’t running a full-time schedule, so Mantell’s looking for ways to get his guys out there, but they only have a couple guys with any significant name value. Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, Terry Taylor, and maybe Chris Adams could give a boost to a promotion getting into things with a local babyface, but just sending Taylor and Adams to have a match against each other won’t help anyone (they did that for the May 2 show in Memphis). Talent sharing isn’t helpful to the other promotions unless they can do a tv angle or work several shows rather than a one-off date (with the rare exception of a Michael Hayes date in Atlanta, or Gordy doing an independent show with a match against Brody or Abdullah).
  • [Memphis] Eddie Gilbert beat Jerry Lawler on May 2 to keep Missy Hyatt’s hair on her head. The finish saw Lawler punch Paul E. Dangerously (who manages Gilbert in Continental) after Missy failed to distract Lawler with her open shirt trick. Dangerously showed up when Lawler went after her, and then Kenny Dee, who was managing Lawler, threw powder in Lawler’s eyes, leading to Gilbert getting the pin. Money wound up changing hands from Dangerously to Hyatt to Dee after the match, so Kenny Dee is a newly minted heel manager.
  • Also in Memphis, the Iceman King Parsons vs. Kerry Von Erich match from the same show got little reaction. People came to see Lawler and Gilbert, not them, and Dave still doesn’t understand putting this match on and billing Parsons as a world champion when the next show is Lawler vs. Hennig for the AWA World Title. It’s just undercutting that match to act like the WCCW title is a world title and then turn around and go “Well here’s a different world title” and being very inconsistent in their recognition of world championships.
  • More on the special referee poll for the May 9 LawleHennig match. They’re running the poll from a 1-900 number (which means a cost of $1 per phone call), so the company was profiting off the poll. That explains the amount of promotion they were doing saying that Larry Hennig was winning the poll by a narrow margin due to fans in Minnesota flooding the line with votes for Hennig. They were doing no such thing, but it’s a smart way to bilk the local fan base. In Memphis, they run their tv show live, so when it started at 11 am, they did a segment where they said the poll would close at noon (Hennig still leading the results) to keep fans voting until the last minute, even doing another segment at 11:45 am. At noon, Lawler came out and acted all serious with his best Bad News Barrett impression and said he was afraid he had some bad news. “Bad news for Curt Hennig, that is,” and announced Jackie Fargo was the winner of the referee poll. Dave guesses the reason for the charge is probably to drum up enough money to pay Curt Hennig enough to be happy, but this sure is a new way to try and make money off wrestling.
  • There’s a newcomer in the Oregon territory named Steve Austin. No, he’s not stone cold, but he’s also used the name Steve Winters (Dave believes this is his real name), and he’ll wind up wrestling for Stampede in the future under the name Lance Idol. Dave’s seen him a bit before in his early days in the Bay area and recalls him being a good worker trying to emulate Ray Stevens in style.
  • Don Owen’s May 7 show had the best case for allowing blading that Dave has ever heard of. They had a Northwest Tag Title cage match with Steve Doll and Scott Peterson beating Avalanche and Mike Golden to regain the titles. Owen believes you need blood in a cage match, while the Oregon commission has banned blading, so how do you suppose Owen got around the issue? Mike Golden got bloody hardway, and they wanted Peterson to bleed too, so they had Golden and Avalanche try to hardway Peterson with potatoes to the forehead. Dave hears they did some 14 hard punches to Peterson’s head and none of them opened him up. One did bust up his nose a bit, though. This is what happens when blading is banned and wrestlers feel the need to get color - they’re going to be really unsafe and hurt themselves.
  • Tatsumi Fujinami beat Vader by countout on April 27, in a show that drew 5,000 in Osaka. For comparison, All Japan’s Brody/Tenryu match there last month drew 4,000. Fujinami had vowed to retire if he couldn’t beat Vader, so they kind of had to have that finish if they wanted Vader to keep his monster aura without honoring a retirement. Anyway, Dave isn’t sure if this is legit or just an angle, but Fujinami is being reported as trying to make a play for the top spot now that Inoki’s foot is broken. He’s even got a new haircut to symbolize his change from being a young disciple of Inoki to being his own man.
  • All Japan Women’s May 15 show has a hell of a triple main event lineup. At the top of the card you have the Crush Girls vs. the Jumping Bomb Angels. Then you have Mika Suzuki vs. Kaoru Maeda for the jr. championship (not a weight class, but rather a title exclusively for wrestlers with under 2 years experience). Lastly, Erika Shishido and Nobuko Kimura defend the AJW tag titles against two of the standout rookies from the class of 1987 who are getting their first crack at major exposure, Manami Toyota and Toshiyo Yamada. Erika Shishido, by the way, is a 17 year old from the class of 1986 and the company has big plans for her as a future heel star and partner for Bull Nakano. You may know her better as Aja Kong.
  • Windy City Wrestling drew remarkably well, drawing $40,000 at International Amphitheater in Chicago. It’s the largest gate Dave’s ever heard of for an independent promotion. The card had Col. DeBeers, Candi Divine and Debbie Combs, Paul E. Dangerously, Buddy Rose and Doug Somers, and a bunch else going on. Based on ticket prices, they pulled an audience of over 4,000 people. The promoter sold the show to the venue for $10,000, so they made a big profit on the event. WWF has taken notice and already there’s talk of them running the same venue, because they believe it may tap into a different crowd than the Rosemont Horizon.
  • [Stampede] Owen Hart’s reign as North American champion has ended as of May 6. He dropped the title to Makhan Singh, whom he beat for the title on April 10, 1987. Definitely a step toward Owen’s departure from the promotion here, as his last match with Stampede if he does go to the WWF will be on May 14 before he does the IWGP series for New Japan. Owen did agree to go to the WWF for a masked gimmick, either a Tiger Mask or Mighty Mouse type, but he’s apparently having second thoughts, perhaps related to a personal goal he supposedly has of having the match of the year with Ric Flair. Sadly, Owen’s never going to get that match. Bret and Davey Boy Smith are pushing hard for Owen to come to WWF.
  • Heading to Stampede is Steve Blackman. Blackman’s done some jobs for WWF in the past and is kind of a powerlifter type. He’s being paired with Brick Bronsky, whom Dave describes as an untalented lifter type (Dave rates the May 7 Edmonton match between Kerry Brown and Bronsky at -3.5 stars and calls it one of the worst matches Stampede will ever have), and their team name is the Abortion Alliance. Jeezus, Bruce.
  • A new women’s wrestling promotion is supposed to start up, doing tapings at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. Wendi Richter and Misty Blue are said to be the top stars and Gordon Solie is said to be on board for announcing, and there’s supposedly tv contracts lined up.
  • Ted Turner is working on a new cable station called TNT. It’s gonna have a lot of MGM movies and sports events, and probably eventually some Crockett wrestling. The FCC is expected to change some regulations, which would put WTBS back to only being Atlanta-local and all the superstations will revert to local tv.
  • Looks like a lock that Financial News Network will be taking on Continental by the end of the month or early June. As for a deal with New Japan, that seems to be on hold, as neither side could come to an agreement.
  • Lawsuits corner. WWF is suing FNN over their Hulkamania package. Larry Sharpe is suing Bam Bam Bigelow for breach of contract. Sharpe was Bigelow’s real manager back in Japan.
  • The best match on an independent show in Brooklyn on April 29 saw Lou Fabiano (a former WWF jobber) team with Cactus Jack against George Skaaland and Tom Brandi. Cactus Jack is a trainee of Dominic DeNucci, and Dave hears that he’s a top flight worker.
  • Word is that Futahaguro (real name Koji Kitao), the yokozuna who got kicked out of sumo, is reporting to the Monster Factory in New Jersey to train under Larry Sharpe. He’s in New York this week on other business (mostly talk shows), so no definite word, but that’s the rumor coming out of the area.
  • The Von Erich Parade of Champions drew an estimated 7,000 fans. Dave anticipates a more accurate estimate and gate next week. The show was… Let me just give some highlights. The first match was terrible. The second match was mostly rest holds and had no heat, and after winning the match Mike George grabbed the mic to make sure the fans knew he was recognized as World Champion in Kansas City. Nobody cared because nobody cares about the Kansas City promotion. Steve Casey was supposed to challenge Eric Embry for the light heavyweight title, but he came in 1.5 pounds over the weight limit. After the crowd heckled Embry, he agreed to a non-title match, which Casey won in 19 seconds. That extra weight made all the difference, I reckon. Bill Irwin vs. Black Bart was fair. Then you had Michael Hayes vs. Terry Gordy in a triple tower of doom and Dave says that while there was heat, the gimmick’s a total dud because you can’t do any moves or take any bumps the way it’s all structured. They then gave the crowd something good, as Terry Taylor beat Chris Adams to keep the Texas title in a great match. The Texas roundup in the triple tower of doom, on the other hand, was the opposite of great. If Dusty plans to actually use this concept, he’s got a lot of work cut out for him, because not one fan in the building understood what the hell was going on. Bruiser Brody carried his match teaming with Kevin Von Erich against Buddy Roberts and Solomon Grundy, and nobody cared about Kevin. They had to replace Schaun Simpson with Terry Gordy due to injury suffered in the Texas roundup for the Wild West/Texas tag title unification match, and Gordy/Simpson won by disqualification. It’s unclear if that makes the Simpsons Wild West tag champs and Gordy/Simpson Texas tag champs, or if it unifies the titles on the Simpsons, or what. In the end, Kerry Von Erich regained the WCCW title. Nobody cares. World Class is every bit as fucked as WCW in 2000.
  • Dave’s got the lineup for the second Clash, and he thinks the NWA is now afraid to put on a hot show. Windham vs. Ricky Santana, Koloff vs. Al Perez, Dusty vs. Larry Zbysko, the Garvins vs. Rotunda and Rick Steiner, the Fantastics vs. Sheepherders for the U.S. Tag Titles, and Blanchard/Anderson defending the NWA tag titles against Sting and Steve Williams. No Flair, Luger, or Road Warriors in sight.
  • When the NWA announced Dusty’s reinstatement, the reaction was pretty negative. After a moment of silence, one woman cheered and two more joined her, and they were swiftly drowned in a chorus of boos.
  • Night 2 of the Crockett Cup grossed $115,000 at the gate. The Cup as a whole managed a combined gate equal to the merch sales gross at Wrestlemania.
  • They’re building a new Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina, and it’s supposed to open in the fall. Word is that WWF will get the first two shows there and Crockett will be relegated to the 2,500 seat Charlotte Park Center, since the old Coliseum building will be torn down. WWF can’t run the existing Coliseum for the same reasons Crockett can’t touch Madison Square Garden, but the new Coliseum has different management with no relationship to Crockett, so they’re going to give WWF a chance.
  • Gordon Solie and Mike Graham’s new Florida Championship Wrestling has opened up and did their first tv taping on April 30. They’re looking to run five days a week in central Florida starting real soon.
  • Antonio Inoki’s injury has led to New Japan declaring the IWGP Title vacant. Tatsumi Fujinami battles Vader on May 7 for the title. Seems to be a lot of behind the scenes tension between Fujinami and Choshu as well. Fujinami walked out after the April 27 show, leaving only Choshu of the original four top draws in the company.
  • Tiger Mask (Mitsuharu Misawa) is getting married on May 10 and will unmask for the wedding. He’s marrying movie star Tomomi Shiina. After the wedding he may stop wrestling as Tiger Mask and go back to his real name.
  • As soon as TNT is available in 30 million homes, Crockett’s tv will be moved there. All kinds of rumors are swirling about Crockett and Turner, but as far as Dave’s aware no firm deal of any kind has been reached.
  • The NWA, Mike Rotunda, Kevin Sullivan, and the city of Albany are all being sued for “torturous acts and personal injury” by 16 year old Mike Strickland. Strickland alleges that on February 9 he was patting wrestlers on the back when city police officers working security for the show seized him and arrested him, then took him to a secluded area where Rotunda and Sullivan “wilfully, intentionally and purposefully assaulted and attempted to commit violent and illegal physical injury” on him and that the police did nothing to stop the beating.
  • Dave wants us to know that although it was extremely predictable, he found the Midnight Express’s party on the WTBS show really entertaining. Yeah, when you have a cake in wrestling it winds up in the heel or announcer’s face, but the banter between Cornette and Stan Lane was really fun.
Watch: Jim Cornette gets caked
  • Ted Turner’s got some kind of package deal he’s pitching, using the July NWA ppv as incentive to get cable systems to buy in on TNT. Or maybe it’s the other way around. Dave understands that the cable companies will likely get a higher share of revenue for the PPV from the show than the usual 50/50 split, and Dave says this show is really do or die for Crockett.
  • Abdullah the Butcher and Kamala no-showed Jerry Blackwell’s May 8 show. They had turned down a spot at the Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions to do that show, so that’s ironic.
  • ”JERRY LAWLER PINNED CURT HENNIG TO WIN THE AWA TITLE ON 5/9 IN MEMPHIS BEFORE 9,500 FANS." The match was apparently “not great” and saw Lawler win by grabbing Hennig by the knees and kangaroo flipping him headlong into the ring post for the pin. Great reaction to the finish, but yeah, Lawler is the new AWA champion. More on this next week.
Watch: the finish to Lawler vs. Hennig
  • One letter writer chimes in that “loser groups” like GLOW and POWW don’t deserve time in the Observer. In fact, he hopes they lose their time slots in New York and Boston to Continental and Memphis to give WWF real competition. Yeah, because those groups are going to be able to do that.
  • Still a bunch of letters sniping back and forth about Clash vs. Wrestlemania. One says they can’t believe anyone could think FlaiSting was the best match they’ve seen in years. Another says that for “Vince McMahon to put WWF fans through that show constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.” As usual, wrestling fans are level-headed and gracious in their disagreements. It warms my soul to see us carrying on this proud tradition of sober discourse on reddit in 2020.
NEXT WEEK: AWA Champion Jerry Lawler, reports from Texas Stadium, Fujinami becomes IWGP champion, Oregon-Washington Wrestling Federation debut show, and more

2020.10.22 16:55 treeshavefeelings2 COVID Wedding Recap/budget - 40 guests on 10.10.20

Location: South Georgia, USA
We received $10,000 from the groom's family and about $5,000 from my mother. Everything else was paid by us. We were very honored to have help as we were not expecting it. My now husband lost his job due to COVID in July so we definitely would not have been able to have this wedding without family helping us and downsizing our guestlist.
Original Budget: 30k
Final Budget: ~$27,207
Monetary Wedding Gifts: $3,700 (basically paid for our honeymoon)
We had planned a 150 person wedding at a historic outdoor venue for 10.10.20. When COVID hit we decided to uninvite almost everyone and did an intimate ceremony & reception at the same outdoor venue with just immediate family plus the bridal party. We paid for 50 (including vendor meals) but due to some last-minute no-shows, we had 45.
DISCLAIMER, before I am COVID shamed: We followed all state and local guidelines. Had both an outdoor ceremony and reception where seating was spaced out for social distancing and families were seated together. Our entire bridal party of 14 people tested negative before the wedding in order for us to safely take pictures together without masks. Masks and hand sanitizer were provided and masks were REQUIRED 100% of the time. I know this is not feasible depending on where some people are located but this worked for us and I am so proud of how we pulled off this safe event during these times.

Venue: I am not mentioning my venue name because I was extremely unhappy with the professionalism of the staff as well as their COVID policies during the pandemic. Basically, they completely refused to work with us in terms of date changes (they required an extra non-refundable deposit in order to reschedule) and I believe they were irresponsible by holding full 100+ person weddings in APRIL and MAY during peak COVID. They had no precautions at all, due to the fact that Georgia lifted restrictions pretty early on in the summer so the precautions we had at our event (such as all venue employees masked!?) were imposed at my insistence.
The venue was beautiful though, and they were pretty much all-inclusive with catering, drinks, florals, tables, chairs, and decor rentals included for a pretty good price. Plus the chef was amazing.
Final payment: $11,500
Dress: My dress was paid for by my mother as a wedding gift.
Wedding shoes: $160
Groom's Tux, shoes, etc. (purchased) : About $550
Rings: We ordered silicone rings online as we are fairly active and I almost never wear my fancy engagement ring out and about. We paid about $35 for both.
Bridal Party Gifts: We purchased jewelry for my bridal party on the day of and bow ties/suspenders for the groom's people. Overall we spent $357.
Bridesmaid Suite: The night before the wedding the bride people and I stayed at the venue site. I paid for this again as a little gift to my favorite people. $625
Rehearsal Dinner: We had dinner at a local women-owned venue called SASS! in Thomasville, GA. A great place, and wonderful hospitality. We had 28 people with meals and an open bar. $1700 including gratuity at the end of the night.
Florals: My aunt did bouquets/boutonnieres out of silk flowers as a wedding gift. The fresh florals for the remaining decor were included in the venue prices.
Guest Favors: Our "favors" to our guests were masks and little custom hand sanitizers purchased on etsy with our names and date. Unfortunately, I purchased the hand sanitizer before we downsized so I bought way more than necessary. $250
Guest Book: Our guest book was a polaroid photo station. I had a couple of bridesmaids take photos of my guests and they taped the photo in our book with a message. Guests were also encouraged to keep a photo as a favor as well! This was by far my FAVORITE expense. My husband and I loved looking through our guestbook over our honeymoon to remind us of the day. 2 Polaroid Instamax mini's, guestbook, tape, and film - $200
Cake: We had a small cutting cake and cupcakes. $150
Decor: Table signage and seating charts were done on hand-painted acrylic sheets with chalk markers. Almost all other decor was provided by the venue. $180
Exit: We did our exit with leaf confetti that we hand made and placed in newspaper cones. It was super cute, eco-friendly, and quite the bonding experiencing making 35 cones! Free
Invitations: I made our invitations on Shutterfly. This expense includes save-the-dates, cancellation postcards, and formal invitations. $800
DJ: Dj was okay, but definitely messed up my first dance and took song requests when I had asked her not to. $1000
Photographer: I LOVED my photographer. I would have paid double this. $2400
Videographer: After we canceled our larger wedding I found a last-minute videographer. I am so glad I did this! I have only received the teaser video but he did an amazing job capturing our ceremony and speeches. I really encourage anyone getting married to PLEASE consider getting a video. $2300
Wedding Hair & Makeup: I had this planned for me + the girls but after COVID hit we decided we felt more comfortable doing it all ourselves. Free
Honeymoon: We had planned a $7k trip to Greece that was obviously canceled. I was able to get about an 80% refund on all of our reservations and flights WITH trip insurance. So we were out $1,500.00 for that trip and spent about $3,500 on a trip to NC mountains for 6 days staying at a 4-star resort. Honeymoon + lost cancelations $5,000.
Final Recap: I loved my wedding day. It was small and personal and perfect. However, writing this recap makes me realize exactly how much money we spent throughout the year and a half planning this. As a couple, we owned our house and were living together, and before COVID we were pretty financially stable. Seeing the 27k up at the top really hurts, especially knowing that a lot of people cannot afford to drop that much money on a wedding. It also stings to know that a couple grand of that is wasted money that we will never get back because of covid deposits and other non refundable purchases that we didn't end up using.
I am glad we did not postpone and instead had a smaller wedding. Honestly, my advice to anyone getting married is to just elope. A lot of stress and crying and money went into this day, and while it was definitely worth it, I will never ever ever do it again.

I hope this helps someone out there. I know I read a lot of these recaps when I was planning. Feel free to ask me questions! And thank god this is over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome back to the fifty-fourth edition of /neoliberal elects the American presidents!
This will be a fairly consistent weekly thing - every week, a new election, until we run out.
I highly encourage you - at least in terms of the vote you cast - to try to think from the perspective of the year the election was held, without knowing the future or how the next administration would go. I'm not going to be trying to enforce that, but feel free to remind fellow commenters of this distinction.
If you're really feeling hardcore, feel free to even speak in the present tense as if the election is truly upcoming!
Whether third and fourth candidates are considered "major" enough to include in the strawpoll will be largely at my discretion and depend on things like whether they were actually intending to run for President, and whether they wound up actually pulling in a meaningful amount of the popular vote and even electoral votes. I may also invoke special rules in how the results will be interpreted in certain elections to better approximate historical reality.
While I will always give some brief background info to spur the discussion, please don't hesitate to bring your own research and knowledge into the mix! There's no way I'll cover everything!
John McCain v Barack Obama, 2008
Profiles
  • John McCain is the 72-year-old Republican candidate and a US Senator from Arizona. His running mate is Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin.
  • Barack Obama is the 47-year-old Democratic candidate and a US Senator from Illinois. His running mate is US Senator from Delaware Joe Biden.
Issues and Background
  • The United States and other countries are in the midst of what many are describing as the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The crisis was largely triggered by a collapse in home prices, which in turn caused securities tied directly or indirectly to real estate to plummet in value. In September, major investment bank Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy. A day later, the Federal Reserve bailed out and essentially took control of insurance giant AIG. Credit markets were on the brink of meltdown. In early October, Congress passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act, which created an enormous government program to purchase "toxic assets" from banks and significantly increased the amount of insurance provided by the FDIC. Both McCain and Obama supported this rescue plan. Liquidity appears to have been restored, but the economic situation is still otherwise dire.
    • Senator Obama has described the current crisis as a "final verdict on eight years of failed economic policies promoted by George Bush, supported by Senator McCain, a theory that basically says that we can shred regulations and consumer protections and give more and more to the most, and somehow prosperity will trickle down." Obama has spoken of the importance of oversight over the TARP $700 billion, of the possibility of getting that money back, of making sure none of that money is going to executive pay or executive severance packages, and of following up the package with help for homeowners.
    • Senator McCain has said that what distinguishes him from Senator Obama on how he will lead the country out of the economic crisis is his commitment to get government spending under control. McCain has proposed a one-year spending freeze on "non-defense, non-veterans discretionary spending." McCain has criticized Senator Obama for supporting "pork-barrel spending" in the past.
  • The US occupation of Iraq continues. Last year, the Bush Administration oversaw a troop surge, and the conventional wisdom is that the situation has generally improved as a result. There are some indications that the security situation is improving and that the training of the new Iraqi military is working. That said, pressure on the US to withdraw has increased, as the Iraqi government has sought a withdrawal timetable and the US coalition partners have begun their own withdraw. Security responsibility for several provinces has already been transferred from US forces to Iraqi forces. However, earlier this year, General David Petraeus called for the delaying of troop withdrawals.
    • Both candidates accuse the other of failures of judgement. Senator Obama has criticized McCain sharply for supporting invading Iraq in the first place, while Senator McCain has criticized Obama for not supporting the 2007 surge. On the latter point, in January 2007 Senator Obama's stance was:
The need to bring this war to an end is here. That is why today I am introducing the Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007. This plan would not only place a cap on the number of troops in Iraq and stop the escalation: more importantly, it would begin a phased redeployment of United States forced with the goal of removing all United States combat forces from Iraq by March 31, 2008.
    • Early this year, Democrats seized on a statement from Senator McCain in which he indicated that he would be comfortable with an American presence in Iraq for "maybe 100" years. He has stood by the comments, saying he was referring to a presence comparable to what the US has had in South Korea, Germany, and Japan.
    • Under the Obama plan for Iraq, a phased withdrawal of most troops would begin which would likely remove the US troop presence by summer of 2010. A residual force would remain "to conduct targeted counter-terrorism missions against al Qaeda in Iraq and to protect American diplomatic and civilian personnel."
    • Under the McCain plan for Iraq, the US would not leave Iraq "before Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated and before a competent, trained, and capable Iraqi security force is in place and operating effectively."
  • Sarah Palin has received a significant amount of both positive and negative attention relative to most VP nominees. Supporters praise her history as a reformer, her advocacy for families with special needs children, and her ability to energize parts of the Republican base. However, critics have raised questions about her knowledge of policy and her readiness to be President if it became necessary. Some in the media have expressed frustration at their limited access to Governor Palin. This scrutiny increased following a poorly received interview with Katie Couric which included the following exchanges:
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land boundary that we have with Canada ... We have trade missions back and forth. We -- we do -- it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where -- where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to -- to our state.
    ...
COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?
PALIN: Well, let’s see. There’s, of course in the great history of America there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but …
COURIC: Can you think of any?
PALIN: Well, I could think of … any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But, you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a vice president, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.
    ...
COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?
PALIN: I’ve read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
    COURIC: What, specifically?
PALIN: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
COURIC: Can you name a few?
PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn’t a foreign country, where it’s kind of suggested, “Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?”
  • Health care reform has come up frequently on the campaign trail. Both candidates recognize a need to increase coverage and lower costs.
    • The Obama plan includes requiring health insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, a tax credit to incentivize small businesses to provide health coverage, requirements on large employers to provide health coverage or otherwise contribute financially to their employee's health care, and "a National Health Insurance Exchange with a range of private insurance options as well as a new public plan based on benefits available to members of Congress."
    • The McCain plan is to offer "a direct refundable tax credit ... of $2,500 for individuals and $5,000 for families to offset the cost of insurance" and promote health savings accounts. McCain also seeks to make it easier to purchase health insurance across state lines.
  • Attention has also been given to the candidate's differing tax plans.
    • The Obama tax plan is to cut taxes for the middle class further than the Bush tax cuts did, while increasing taxes on the wealthiest 2% of Americans back to levels as they were in the 1990s. Senator Obama also seeks to implement a universal 10% mortgage interest tax credit, the elimination of income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 a year, and an expansion of the EITC.
    • The McCain tax plan is to preserve all of the Bush tax cuts, phase out the Alternative Minimum Tax, cut the corporate tax rate to 25%, and establish a large R&D tax credit. Senator McCain also pledges to keep the Internet free of taxes.
    • In October at a campaign stop, Senator Obama was confronted by Joe Wurzelbacher, who has since become known colloquially as "Joe the Plumber", with concerns that he would be taxed more if Senator Obama were to become President. More recently, Wurzelbacher has made joint appearances with John McCain on the campaign trail. The McCain campaign has in particular seized on Obama's comment to Joe that "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."
  • McCain, currently 72, would be the oldest first-term President if elected. McCain gave reporters an opportunity to review his full medical records, which showed that he is generally in good health and has relatively low risk of heart disease despite slightly elevated cholesterol and past issues with skin cancer.
  • If elected, Senator Obama would be the first African-American President of the United States. Obama was born in Hawaii, the son of a Kenyan economist and an anthropologist from Kansas. While many find the possibility of the first African-American President inspiring, particularly when combined with the optimistic rhetoric of Senator Obama's campaign, his identity has also been related to unique challenges for him during the campaign. Members of his own party during the primary implied that his success in the race was mainly due to his race. Former VP nominee Geraldine Ferraro said:
If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position. And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept.
Senator Biden, now Obama's running mate, said:
I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that's a storybook, man.
In addition, Senator Obama has faced false rumors that he was born in Kenya and that he is not Christian. Some argue that the spread of these rumors is motivated partially or entirely by racism.
  • Republicans have argued that Senator Obama is connected to problematic persons and organizations.
    • Roughly 40 years ago, now-professor Bill Ayers was a leading member of the militant Weather Underground Organization, which conducted a bombing campaign of targeting government buildings and financial institutions. Ayers first met Barack Obama through a non-profit reform project's board of directors, and later hosted a small informal event where a departing State Senator introduced Obama as her chosen successor. Through each of their active involvements in Chicago events and initiatives, they would serve on a couple of the same boards and panels in the years afterwards. There is virtually no evidence to support some Republican claims that Ayers was some sort of political adviser to Obama, who has referred to Ayers as "somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8."
    • Senator Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has been the subject of controversy related to several sermon excerpts. The excerpts include claims that the government lied about its advance knowledge of Pearl Harbor, that the government lied about "inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color," and his comment that "America's chickens are coming home to roost," interpreted by some to be referring to the 9/11 attacks given the date of the sermon. President Obama addressed the issue in a broader speech on race in March of this year. Senator Obama stated:
I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of his political views? Absolutely—just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed.
      ...
I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother—a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. These people are a part of me. And they are a part of America, this country that I love.
    • Pro-labor NGO ACORN has been accused by Republicans of orchestrating voter fraud, though further investigation has revealed this claim to be overstated at best. ACORN has hired people in the past to assist in voter registration, and sometimes these workers have come up with phony registrations - however, this issue seems to be motivated by laziness of individual workers rather than an attempt to conduct voter fraud. Obama served as a local counsel for ACORN in the 90s, and was endorsed by the ACORN political action committee during the primary. The Obama campaign also hired an ACORN affiliate for get-out-the-vote efforts during the primary.
  • Representative John Lewis, a civil rights icon, has received blowback for comments he made regarding the tone of the McCain/Palin campaign. Lewis accused the campaign of "sowing the seeds of hatred and division," and brought up the example of George Wallace never throwing a bomb or firing a gun but creating "the climate and the conditions that encouraged vicious attacks against innocent Americans." McCain called the comments "hurtful" and called on Senator Obama to repudiate the comments. The Obama campaign has said that the comparison made by Rep. Lewis was inappropriate.
  • Senator McCain describes himself as a "free trader" and has criticized Senator Obama for opposing some free trade agreements. The Obama team has pledged to "use trade agreements to spread good labor and environmental standards around the world and stand firm against agreements like the Central American Free Trade Agreement that fail to live up to those important benchmarks." Senator Obama has also pledged to "fix" NAFTA.
Debate Excerpts
First Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) Obama on government spending:
John, it's been your president who you said you agreed with 90 percent of the time who presided over this increase in spending. This orgy of spending and enormous deficits you voted for almost all of his budgets. So to stand here and after eight years and say that you're going to lead on controlling spending and, you know, balancing our tax cuts so that they help middle class families when over the last eight years that hasn't happened I think just is, you know, kind of hard to swallow.
(2) McCain on Iraq:
I think the lessons of Iraq are very clear that you cannot have a failed strategy that will then cause you to nearly lose a conflict. Our initial military success, we went in to Baghdad and everybody celebrated. And then the war was very badly mishandled. I went to Iraq in 2003 and came back and said, we've got to change this strategy. This strategy requires additional troops, it requires a fundamental change in strategy and I fought for it. And finally, we came up with a great general and a strategy that has succeeded.
(3) Obama on meeting foreign adversaries "without precondition":
I reserve the right, as president of the United States to meet with anybody at a time and place of my choosing if I think it's going to keep America safe ... Now, understand what this means "without preconditions." It doesn't mean that you invite them over for tea one day. What it means is that we don't do what we've been doing, which is to say, "Until you agree to do exactly what we say, we won't have direct contacts with you."
(4) McCain on Iran:
My reading of the threat from Iran is that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, it is an existential threat to the State of Israel and to other countries in the region because the other countries in the region will feel compelling requirement to acquire nuclear weapons as well.
Now we cannot have a second Holocaust. Let's just make that very clear. What I have proposed for a long time, and I've had conversation with foreign leaders about forming a league of democracies, let's be clear and let's have some straight talk. The Russians are preventing significant action in the United Nations Security Council.
Vice-Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) Biden on what his administration would look like if a President Obama were to die in office:
God forbid that would ever happen, it would be a national tragedy of historic proportions if it were to happen.
But if it did, I would carry out Barack Obama's policy, his policies of reinstating the middle class, making sure they get a fair break, making sure they have access to affordable health insurance, making sure they get serious tax breaks, making sure we can help their children get to college, making sure there is an energy policy that leads us in the direction of not only toward independence and clean environment but an energy policy that creates 5 million new jobs, a foreign policy that ends this war in Iraq, a foreign policy that goes after the one mission the American public gave the president after 9/11, to get and capture or kill bin Laden and to eliminate al Qaeda. A policy that would in fact engage our allies in making sure that we knew we were acting on the same page and not dictating.
(2) Palin on what her administration would look like if a President McCain were to die in office:
And heaven forbid, yes, that would ever happen, no matter how this ends up, that that would ever happen with either party.
As for disagreeing with John McCain and how our administration would work, what do you expect? A team of mavericks, of course we're not going to agree on 100 percent of everything. As we discuss ANWR there, at least we can agree to disagree on that one. I will keep pushing him on ANWR. I have so appreciated he has never asked me to check my opinions at the door and he wants a deliberative debate and healthy debate so we can make good policy.
What I would do also, if that were to ever happen, though, is to continue the good work he is so committed to of putting government back on the side of the people and get rid of the greed and corruption on Wall Street and in Washington.
Second Presidential Debate (Town Hall) (full transcript)
(1) McCain on nuclear energy:
But we kept the debate going, and we kept this issue to -- to posing to Americans the danger that climate change opposes. Now, how -- what's -- what's the best way of fixing it? Nuclear power. Senator Obama says that it has to be safe or disposable or something like that. Look, I -- I was on Navy ships that had nuclear power plants. Nuclear power is safe, and it's clean, and it creates hundreds of thousands of jobs.
(2) Obama on McCain's criticism that he's being reckless on foreign policy:
Senator McCain, this is the guy who sang, "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran," who called for the annihilation of North Korea. That I don't think is an example of "speaking softly." This is the person who, after we had -- we hadn't even finished Afghanistan, where he said, "Next up, Baghdad."
(3) McCain on Russia:
I said before, watch Ukraine. Ukraine, right now, is in the sights of Vladimir Putin, those that want to reassemble the old Soviet Union. We've got to show moral support for Georgia. We've got to show moral support for Ukraine. We've got to advocate for their membership in NATO. We have to make the Russians understand that there are penalties for these this kind of behavior, this kind of naked aggression into Georgia, a tiny country and a tiny democracy.
(4) Obama on spending priorities:
You know, you may have seen your health care premiums go up. We've got to reform health care to help you and your budget. We are going to have to deal with energy because we can't keep on borrowing from the Chinese and sending money to Saudi Arabia. We are mortgaging our children's future. We've got to have a different energy plan. We've got to invest in college affordability. So we're going to have to make some investments, but we've also got to make spending cuts. And what I've proposed, you'll hear Senator McCain say, well, he's proposing a whole bunch of new spending, but actually I'm cutting more than I'm spending so that it will be a net spending cut.
Third Presidential Debate (full transcript)
(1) McCain on Obama's economic plans:
I don't think there's any doubt that Sen. Obama wants to restrict trade and he wants to raise taxes. And the last president of the United States that tried that was Herbert Hoover, and we went from a deep recession into a depression.
(2) Obama on comments by Congressman Lewis:
I mean, look, if we want to talk about Congressman Lewis, who is an American hero, he, unprompted by my campaign, without my campaign's awareness, made a statement that he was troubled with what he was hearing at some of the rallies that your running mate was holding, in which all the Republican reports indicated were shouting, when my name came up, things like "terrorist" and "kill him," and that your running mate didn't mention, didn't stop, didn't say "Hold on a second, that's kind of out of line."
(3) McCain on Obama's connections:
I don't care about an old washed-up terrorist [Bill Ayers]. But as Sen. Clinton said in her debates with you, we need to know the full extent of that relationship.
We need to know the full extent of Sen. Obama's relationship with ACORN, who is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy. The same front outfit organization that your campaign gave $832,000 for "lighting and site selection." So all of these things need to be examined, of course.
(4) Obama on who he associates with:
Let me tell you who I associate with. On economic policy, I associate with Warren Buffett and former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker. If I'm interested in figuring out my foreign policy, I associate myself with my running mate, Joe Biden or with Dick Lugar, the Republican ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, or General Jim Jones, the former supreme allied commander of NATO.
Those are the people, Democrats and Republicans, who have shaped my ideas and who will be surrounding me in the White House. And I think the fact that this has become such an important part of your campaign, Sen. McCain, says more about your campaign than it says about me.

On October 11, 2020, about 0825 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-32-260, N3595W, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), Atlanta, Georgia. The pilot and two passengers were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, he landed at PDK on October 10, 2020, and requested the airplane fuel tanks be topped off. On the day of the accident, he performed a preflight inspection of the airplane with no anomalies noted and taxied the airplane to runway 21R. He "advanced the throttle to full power for takeoff and noted that the RPMs was producing full power, temps and pressures where in range and that airspeed was alive and increasing as normal." The pilot stated that after takeoff, the airplane continued to accelerate normally until about 150-200 ft above ground level when he noted an "abrupt reduction in engine noise." He attempted to land on the remaining runway; however, the airplane departed the runway and traveled about 200 ft into the grass. After the airplane came to rest, the pilot subsequently restarted the engine and taxied the airplane from the grass back onto the runway, where it was towed to the ramp. The airplane was retained for further examination.

Description

He fiadvanced the throttle to full power for takeoff and noted that the RPMs was producing full power, temps and pressures where in range and that airspeed was alive and increasing as normal.fl The pilot stated that after takeoff, the airplane continued to accelerate normally until about 150-200 ft above ground level when he noted an fiabrupt reduction in engine noise.fl He attempted to land on the remaining runway; however, the airplane departed the runway and traveled about 200 ft into the grass. After the airplane came to rest, the pilot subsequently restarted the engine and taxied the airplane from the grass back onto the runway, where it was towed to the ramp. The airplane was retained for further examination.

2020.10.19 18:01 youto2 It Just Means More - Part One

We slowly fade from black into the live stream, where we see the jam packed venue for tonight’s show, with 1090 WiR fans in attendance cheering, holding up their signs and chanting as we go on air.
Crowd: W-i-R! W-i-R! W-i-R!
The camera cuts and we see Paisner and Woodbridge at the commentary desk, as the crowd continues to be loud.
Paisner: Welcome everyone to the jam packed GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta Georgia, where WiR presents…..IT JUST MEANS MORE! I’m Allen Paisner, joined here by Mark Woodbridge-
Woodbridge: -who’s joined here by Johnnie Walker Black!...
Woodbridge displays his bottle to the camera, as Paisner picks the introduction back up.
Paisner: And these WiR fans are JACKED for what promises to be a great night of action!
Woodbridge: You ain’t kidding! KCJ defends her Independent Title against Tony Stevens, The Stargazers defend the World Tag Belts against The Horde, and we crown the Interim WiR World Champion in a 6 Man Scramble!
Paisner: Not to mention Team BS vs. The Young Cardinals in Tag Team Action, and Austin Balandran vs. Klutch, which has MAJOR implications for the legal future of this company!
Woodbridge: Right! But up first, it’s gonna be a DANDY! Jim Baker vs. Cam’ron West, with a very unique stipulation!
Paisner: It’s gonna be the SOUL ON A POLE match, and it‘ll be a hell of a way to start this thing off! Let's take it down to our ring announcer Javier Babaganoush for the introductions.
We cut to the hard cam, and see Javier Babaganoush in the center of the ring with mic in hand, ready to speak.
Babaganoush: Ladies and Gentlemen, your opening contest is a SOUL ON A POLE MATCH!!!
Crowd: YYYEEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Babaganoush: In this contest, there are no Pinfalls, No Submissions, No Count-outs and No Disqualifications! The ONLY way to win, is to retrieve the Lunchbox containing the “Soul” of each competitor from the top of the pole!
The camera pans to the large Pole which has been attached to the corner of the ring. At the very top there is a Lunchbox dangling from a small steel chain, the same lunchbox Cam’ron West used to “extract the souls” of each competitor on the recent episode of House Party.
Babaganoush: Your referee for this contest is Mia So Hung!
Mia So Hung steps through the ropes into the ring, and waves out to the audience to a small pop from the crowd.
Crowd: YYYAAAAAAAYYYY!!!
Paisner: Here we go, It’s Soul on a Pole, and this match is brought to you by, somewhat befittingly, Disney & Pixar’s SOUL, coming to the Disney Plus streaming service on December 25th this year!
Woodbridge: Can’t wait for that one!
Jim Baker’s theme hits the sound system, and the camera erupts in a mix of cheers and boos, but the reception is definitely mostly positive. Baker himself steps through the curtains, wearing a Horde Jacket, and his usual black trunks and boots. Baker shadowboxes and the top of the entrance stage, before walking down the aisle, stretching his arms out as he does so, warming himself up as he walks.
Babaganoush: Introducing first, representing The Horde, from Cincinnati, Ohio, weighing in at 245 pounds…………..JIM…..BAAAKKKEEER!!!!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Jim Baker rolls himself into the ring, and continues to stretch, knowing that he’s gotta stay in decent shape, considering this is his first of 2 matches tonight.
Paisner: And here comes Jim Baker of The Horde, and this won’t be his only rodeo tonight. First he has this match with West, and later on tonight he’ll be challenging for the Tag Titles!
Woodbridge: And you gotta wonder how that’s gonna play into this one. Is Baker looking to the Horizon and not in front of his face? We know he wants to bring the World Tag Titles to The Horde, but he’s gotta stay 100 percent focused on Cam’ron here, and worry about the Tag Match later.
Paisner” But one thing is for sure; win or lose, the faster Baker can get through Cam’ron here, the better it is for his chances at winning the World Tag Titles tonight.
Baker looks ready to go, and his music fades away. We soon hear none other than the Anime intro-like theme of Cam’ron West, as West steps through the curtains to a pop from the crowd!
Crowd: YYYEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Cam’ron stands at the top of the stage, with very minimalist pyro going off, before walking down the aisle and towards the ring.
Babaganoush: And his opponent, from Another World, weighing in at 180 Pounds……..CAM’RON…….WEEEESSSTTTT!!!
Crowd: YYYYYYYEEEEEEAAAHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Cam’ron West is a bit of an oddball, but he’s no doubt got heart, and the fans respect him for it.
Woodbridge: He’s not only got heart, but he’s got a set on him too! He burned Jim Baker’s park bench to ashes, for god's sakes! I heard around the grapevine that he basically lived on that thing for a year!
Paisner: The rivalry between these two has escalated at a lightning fast rate these last few weeks, but now, at It Just Means More, someone’s ‘Soul’ will be claimed in this match!!!
Cam’ron hops up to the apron, and steps through the ropes into the ring. He doesn’t take his eyes off Baker, and Baker’s eyes are firmly locked on West as well. Cam’ron’s music fades away, and the two are left in their opposite corners, as the referee, Mia So Hung, checks to see if each competitor is ready.
Woodbridge: In a match like this, no DQ, no Count Outs, no submission or pinfall to record, Mia’s basically just out here to check on the general well being of the competitors, and that MAY very well be a good idea with these two heated rivals.
Mia sees that both competitors are ready, and calls for the opening bell!
DING DING DING!
Cam’ron and Baker immediately meet in the middle of the ring, and start throwing wild right hands at each other, trading blows back and forth!
Paisner: And here we go, this one’s starting off HOT!
Baker and Cam’ron continue to trade shots, back and forth, but after a bit it appears as if Cam’ron gets the upper hand. Baker appears to be much groggier than Cam’ron. Cam’ron throws another shot at Baker, but this time Baker doesn’t follow up, and Cam’ron hits him with another, and another, and another! Baker stands on wobbly legs in the middle of the ring, and Cam’ron takes a couple of steps back, winding up his arm before lunging at Baker with a big punch, but Baker blocks it, and catches Cam’ron with a punch of his own! Now Baker starts hitting West with a flurry of right hands, and backs Cam’ron into the ropes! Cameron stands a bit dazed, leaning against the ropes, and Baker turns around to run towards the opposite set of ropes, rebounding off of them and charging at Cam’ron!
Woodbridge: Look at Baker!
Baker dashes towards Cam’ron, and clotheslines him over the top rope and to the floor! With Cam’ron out of the ring, Baker quickly makes a beeline for the Pole, running towards the corner and starting to climb the turnbuckles, quickly trying to reach up at the Lunchbox containing the ‘Souls’!!
Paisner: Baker’s gonna win it right here!!!!
But Cam’ron quickly gets back up to his feet, using the ring apron to help him back up. Cam’ron slides back in the ring, and runs over to the corner, jumping up and hitting Baker in the spine with a forearm shot.
Woodbridge: Cam’ron’s not gonna go down without a fight!
Baker continues to try and reach the Lunchbox to pull it down, but Cam’ron grabs Baker by the leg, and pulls him off the top rope! Baker comes down and hits his face on the top turnbuckle, and stands near the corner looking a bit dazed! Cam’ron grabs Baker by the head, and takes him down to the mat with a Snapmare, immediately followed up with an elbow strike to the top of the head!
Crowd: YYYEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!
Baker lays on the mat clutching his head, and Cam’ron gets back up to his feet, and walks over to the corner with the ‘Souls’ on the Pole. Cam’ron starts climbing up the turnbuckles, trying to reach the Lunchbox, but he’s out of reach as he stands on the second rope. Cam’ron looks about ready to climb up to the top rope, but before he does, he turns around to see Baker getting back up to his feet. Cam’ron decides against going for the ‘Soul’ for now, and turns his body around to face Baker as he stands on the second rope. Baker gets back up to a vertical base, and Cam’ron leaps off the second rope to catch him with a dropkick!!
Crowd: YYYYEEEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!
Paisner: And what a dropkick from Cam’ron West!
Woodbridge: Cam’ron’s not your typical wrestler, but that was a veteran move from him to check on Baker’s status before going all the way up to the top rope.
Baker lays on the mat in pain, as the crowd applauds the athleticism from Cam’ron. Cam’ron gets back up to his feet, and leaps up into the air before coming down onto the prone Baker with a Legdrop! Baker rolls towards the ropes, and rolls out of the ring to the floor. Cam’ron walks over to the ropes, and steps through them onto the apron, dropping onto the floor as well. Cam’ron peels Baker off the floor and up to his feet, and tucks his head, before lifting him up and dropping him with a Snap Suplex to the floor!
Crowd: OOOOHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Snap Suplex to the floor!!!
Baker lays in a heap on the floor, clutching his back, and wincing in pain. Cam’ron doesn’t give him much of a rest though, as he bends down to pick Baker back up off the floor, and once again he grabs a hold of him, dropping him to the floor with another Suplex!
Paisner: Another suplex from Cam’ron to Baker on the floor!
Woodbridge: And Cam’ron can do it again and again and again if he wants to! There’s no risk of getting counted out in this match!
Baker yells in pain now as he lays on the floor, while Cam’ron turns his attention to the apron of the ring. West lifts up the ringskirt, and looks underneath the ring for a potential weapon! After a bit of searching, Cam’ron pulls a TABLE out from underneath the ring!
Crowd: YYYYEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Cam’ron’s got a table! This doesn’t bode well for Baker!
Cam’ron starts undoing the table legs, and setting the table in its upright position at ringside. Cam’ron gets the table completely set up, but as he turns around to check on Baker, he gets caught off guard with a big forearm shot to the face! Baker follows up with another forearm, and another, and another! Baker then grabs Cam’ron by the back of the head, and bashes his face into the set-up Table!
Crowd: OOOHHHHHH!!!
Woodbridge: Baker smacking Cam’ron’s face against that hard wooden table! Cam’ron may have taken a bit too long to get that table set up!
Paisner: Or maybe he didn’t damage Baker enough before trying to set up the table in the first place! Either way, Baker’s back in the driver's seat!
Baker sends Cam’ron back through the ropes and inside the ring and Baker slides in after him. Cam’ron starts trying to get back up to his feet, but Baker hits him with a hard kick to the gut, and follows up by grabbing him, and lifting him over his head and to the mat with a Pumphandle Suplex!
Crowd: YYYEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!
Baker starts making his way over to the corner with the pole, but he hesitates for a moment. He turns around to see Cam’ron trying to push himself up to his feet, and he realizes more work must be done. Baker walks back over to Cam’ron, and grabs him by the head, planting him on the mat with a SPIKE DDT!
Paisner: SPIKE DDT!!! Good lord!
Woodbridge: Baker just drilled him!
Baker gets back up once again, and starts making his way to the corner with the pole once more. Baker starts climbing the turnbuckles again, but as he gets up to the second rope, he hears some rustling behind him. Baker pauses his climb for a moment to turn around, and he sees Cam’ron once again starting to stir, starting to get back up to a vertical base.
Woodbridge: Cam'ron-sama is refusing to stay down!
Paisner: And this seems to be throwing a monkey wrench in Baker’s plans! He’s trying to win this ASAP so he can be fresh for the Tag Title Match later tonight, but Cam’ron is proving to be tougher than he may have expected!
Baker hops off the turnbuckle once again, and makes his way to Cam’ron. Baker pulls Cam’ron up to his feet, and grabs Cam’ron by the back of the head. Baker now has his eyes locked on the table that Cam’ron set up at ringside!
Crowd: OOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Baker’s got eyes on that table!!!
Woodbridge: THIS will keep Cam’ron down!
Baker grabs a hold of the back of Cam’ron’s head, and starts running with him to the ropes!
Woodbridge: He’s gonna send him through!!!
Baker chucks Cam’ron over the top rope, but Cam’ron hangs onto the top rope for dear life, as he stands on the apron in dangerous proximity to the table!
Paisner: Cam’ron hung onto the top rope, and that saved him from going through that table!
Woodbridge: But look at Baker!
Baker bounces off the opposite set of ropes, and starts charging at West, looking to knock him off the table, but Cam’ron gets his feet up, catching Baker on the side of the head with an Enziguiri! Baker takes a few steps back, looking a bit rocked after that kick, and Cam’ron somersaults through the middle rope, before popping up and taking Baker down with a big dropkick!!!!
Crowd: YYYYEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!
Paisner: What a move from Cam’ron!
Woodbridge: This may be his opportunity!
Baker scrambles back up to his feet, but he runs right into the arms of Cam’ron, who takes him down to the mat with a BIG BLUE THUNDER BOMB!
Crowd: YYYYYEEEAAAAAHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Blue Thunder Bomb! Blue Thunder Bomb!
Woodbridge: Cam’ron’s starting to feel it!
Baker looks dazed, laying in a heap on the mat, but he slowly starts to roll onto his stomach, push himself up, and rise back up to a vertical base. Cam’ron stands against the ropes, lying in wait, looking fired up!
Crowd: CAM-RON! CAM-RON! CAM-RON!
Paisner: This crowd’s on their feet!
Baker, with a look of pain on his face, makes his way up to his feet, and Cam’ron lunges with full force towards Baker………………. taking him down with a big RUNNING LARIAT!
Woodbridge: THE WEST-ERN LARIAT!!!
Instinctually, Cam’ron goes for the cover, hooking the leg, but Mia reminds Cam that the match cannot be won by pinfall!
Paisner: But Pinfalls don’t count!
Woodbridge: If they did, Cam’ron would’ve just won this!
Paisner: Cam’ron just let muscle-memory take over. He’s from another world, and as such he may be getting used to regular wrestling matches, but he’s not entirely used to matches like this, where there are no Pinfalls!
Cam’ron looks a bit flustered, but he doesn’t let it affect him for long. Cam’ron now starts walking over to the corner with the Pole, and starts climbing up the turnbuckles, while Baker lays in a heap on the mat!
Woodbridge: Now Cam’ron has his eyes on the prize, and this may be the beginning of the end of this match!
Camron climbs all the way up to the top rope, and starts reaching up at the lunchbox, mere fingertips away!
Paisner: Cam’ron’s close! He’s real close!
Camron tries to grab a hold of the lunchbox, but as he reaches up, Baker starts getting back up to a vertical base, and starts hobbling towards the ropes.
Woodbridge: Baker’s up, fighting through the pain!
Baker hobbles towards the ropes at a great speed, and flails his body at the top rope, causing Cam’ron’s foot to slip off the rope, and Cam’ron crotches himself on the top turnbuckle!!!
Crowd: OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Woodbridge: DAMN! Right in the family jewels! And look at Cam’ron, he’s in agony!
Camron sits crotched on the top turnbuckle, with a look of pure agony and pain on his face! Baker hobbles over to West on the turnbuckles, and pulls his body downwards with his feet still hooked on the turnbuckles, setting Cam’ron up in the Tree of Woe!
Crowd: OOOOHHHH!!!
Paisner: Tree of Woe! This could be DISASTROUS for Cam’ron West!!!
Baker steps through the ropes, and starts climbing up the turnbuckles, slowly making his way up to the top rope, and using the pole to help balance himself. He looks down at Cam’ron, who hasn’t moved very much in the tree of woe, and Baker starts reaching up for the Lunchbox, trying to grab a hold of it, unhook it and put this match to rest!
Paisner: Baker’s got another match to worry about later tonight, he’s doing the smart thing here, trying to end this ASAP!
But as Baker tries to grab the Lunchbox, Cam’ron starts using his core strength to slowly pull himself back up!
Woodbridge: But Cam’ron’s not quite done yet!
Baker looks down to see Cam’ron trying to get back up, and he kicks him right in the face, sending Cam’ron right back down in the tree of woe position!
Paisner: Baker’s gotta create some separation between himself and Cam’ron, and I think he may realize it too!
Baker now stands on the top turnbuckle facing Cam’ron, looking down at him as he tries to pull himself up again. Cam’ron tries to use his core and pull himself back up asain, but Baker leaps off the top, and comes down onto West with a DIVING DOUBLE FOOT STOMP!
Crowd: OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: WHAT A STOMP! CAM’RON’S GOTTA BE OUT!!!
Cam’ron lays on the mat with a look of agony on his face, while Baker quickly rolls out of the ring, and lifts up the ringskirt to look for a weapon! Baker pulls a STEEL CHAIR out, and slides it into the ring before rolling in the ring himself!
Woodbridge: Now Baker has a chair! Cam’ron’s in deep shit!!!
Baker positions the Chair flat in the center of the ring, before making his way over to the vulnerable West. Baker bends down, and grabs Cam’ron by the arms, dragging him to the center of the ring. Baker pulls Cam back up to a vertical base, before tucking his head in between his legs, lifting him up……...and DROPPING HIM RIGHT ONTO THE STEEL CHAIR WITH A THUNDEROUS POWERBOMB!!!
Crowd:OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
Paisner: POWERBOMB!!!! ONTO THE STEEL CHAIR!!!
Woodbridge: HOT DAMN! CAM IS OUT!!!!
Cam’ron looks to be nearly motionless on the mat, and he seems absolutely physically spent!
Woodbridge: Cam’ron just got sent for a ride, and now Baker’s going for the ‘Souls!’ This has gotta be it!
Baker wastes no time after the Big Powerbomb. After dropping Cam’ron, Baker immediately makes his way to the corner with the pole, and he starts climbing up the turnbuckles as fast as his body can muster!
Paisner: Baker’s climbing, and Cam’ron’s still down!
Baker climbs up the turnbuckles and stands on the top rope, reaching up and grazing his fingers on the Lunchbox!
Paisner: Baker’s got his fingers on that Lunchbox, he’s just gotta get a good grip on it!
Baker, while trying to keep his balance on the top rope, desperately tries to reach for the Lunchbox, and he almost gets a good grip on it…
Woodbridge: Baker’s about to put this one away!
Baker finally grabs a hold of the Lunchbox………....but Cam’ron West, fighting through all the pain in his body, starts getting back up to his feet on the mat, and he quickly hobbles himself over to the corner!
Crowd: YYYEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: How is Cam’ron standing?!?!
Woodbridge: I don’t know, but he may be too late!!!
Cam’ron wastes little time, and climbs up to the second rope, throwing forearm shots into the back of Baker. Baker still keeps his balance on the top turnbuckle, hanging onto the pole for stability, as he grabs a hold of the Lunchbox with his other hand!!!
Paisner: Baker’s just gotta unhook the Lunchbox!!!
Cam’ron now climbs all the way up to the top rope, and grabs Baker by the waist, leaning back and trying to use gravity to pull him off the turnbuckle!!! Baker starts to tip backwards, and he releases his grip on the lunchbox to grab the pole with both hands, hanging on for dear life!!!
Woodbridge: Cam’ron’s trying to take him down!
Paisner: Baker’s desperately trying to hang on!!!
Cam’ron throws a couple more forearm strikes to the back of Baker, and tries to pull him off again, but Baker hangs on!
Crowd: PLEASE-DON’T-DIE! PLEASE-DON’T-DIE! PLEASE-DON’T-DIE!
Paisner: How much longer can Baker hang on!?!?!
Cam’ron, still with one arm wrapped around Baker’s waist, now starts reaching out to Baker’s upper arm with his free hand, hitting him with hammer strikes to the bicep, trying to break Baker’s grip as he hangs on for dear life with both hands!!! With each strike from Cam’ron to Baker’s bicep, Baker loses more and more grip, and his fingers start slipping off the pole!
Paisner: Baker’s slipping!!!
With Baker’s grip severely weakened, Cam’ron hooks both arms around Baker’s waist once again, and leans back………………throwing Baker off the top rope with a SUPER GERMAN SUPLEX!!!!
Crowd: OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: SUPER GERMAN SUPLEX!!!! BAKER COLLAPSES IN A HEAP!!!!
Baker lays nearly motionless on the mat, but Cam’ron starts using the nearby ropes to help pull himself back up to a vertical base! Cam’ron looks up at the Lunchbox, and starts climbing the turnbuckles!
Crowd: YYYEEAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: Baker’s down, and Cam’ron West may be a few small moments away from victory!
Cam’ron slowly climbs up the turnbuckles, reaching up to the Lunchbox, but he’s not quite there yet. He climbs up to the top rope, grabbing a hold of the pole to balance himself, and he reaches up to the lunchbox, grazing his fingers on it!
Woodbridge: Cam is close, he’s REAL close!!!
Cam’ron manages to get a good grip on the Lunchbox, and starts trying to unhook it!
Paisner: It looks like Cam’ron’s got it!!!
Cam’ron just about unhooks it, but before he can, suddenly a whole entire STEEL CHAIR is thrown by a kneeling Baker in the ring, and it thwacks Cam’ron on the back of the head!!!!
Crowd: OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Woodbridge: DAMN! Baker just chucked that chair at West!
Paisner: Baker didn’t have enough time to get up and physically pull Cam’ron off that turnbuckle, but thanks to that Steel Chair that was used earlier being close to him on the mat, as well as a great throw, Baker’s momentarily still in this one!
Baker stays in his kneeling position on the mat, still in a great deal of pain, while Cam’ron pulls his hand off the Lunchbox to favor the back of his head, as he stands groggy on the top rope.
Woodbridge: Cam may be out on his feet on that top rope! This is a very precarious position!
Baker drops down from his knees to flat down on the mat, and rolls over to the side of the ring, rolling underneath the ropes, and using them to pull himself back up to his feet on the apron. Baker walks over to the corner, and starts throwing punches at Cam’ron’s thigh, causing Cam to hunch over and try to balance himself against the pole. With Cam hunched over, Baker reaches up……….shoving Cam’ron off the top, sending him CRASHING THROUGH THE TABLE SET UP AT RINGSIDE!!!!
Crowd: OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Woodbridge: JESUS!!!
Paisner: CAM’RON THROUGH THE TABLE!!!
Cam’ron lays in the wreckage of the broken table on the floor, and Mia So Hung immediately checks on him. The crowd starts chanting at what they’ve just seen!
Crowd: HO-LY-SHIT! HO-LY-SHIT! HO-LY-SHIT!
Paisner: And the table that Cam’ron set up earlier in the match just came back to haunt him, and now Baker’s all but won this thing!
Baker looks down at the wreckage of the table and Cam’ron, before climbing up the turnbuckles, slowly getting closer and closer to the top while Cam’ron remains motionless on the floor. Baker stands on the top rope, hanging on to the pole for support, while reaching up at the Lunchbox, grabbing ahold of it……..and unhooking it from the pole, securing the Lunchbox with the ‘Souls’ of himself and Cam’ron and winning the match! Mia So Hung calls for the bell!
DING DING DING!
Paisner: Jim Baker has done it, he has the ‘Soul’ of Cam’ron West!
Babaganoush: At a time of 17 minutes and 20 seconds, here is your winner……….JIM…..BBAAAKKKEERRRRR!!!
Crowd: WOOOOOOOOOOO!
As Baker’s music hits, the crowd rises to their feet and starts applauding, clapping for both men for their efforts in the match. Baker stands on the top rope against the pole, looking elated after this big win.
Paisner: Holy SMOKES what a brawl that was! Both men gave it their all, and they’re standing here in Atlanta!
Baker climbs down off the corner with the Lunchbox in hand, raising his fist in the air in victory, but taking some deep breaths as he does so.
Paisner: Congratulations to Baker, but hats off to Cam’ron as well! What a way to kick this show off!
Baker rolls out of the ring, with the Lunchbox in hand, and he looks down at Cam’ron who is still being tended to by Mia So Hung. Cam’ron barely has his eyes open, but Baker nods his head slightly down at him, a small show of respect from Baker to West.
Crowd: YYYYEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!
Paisner: West gave it a hell of a go in that match, and while Baker may not like him, I think he’s earned a bit of Baker’s respect here tonight.
Baker walks back up the aisle, not limping, not showing any major signs of injury, but he definitely looks to be in a great deal of pain, and looks slightly exhausted.
Paisner: After that match, the two questions on my mind are ‘Where does Cam’ron West go from here?’ and ‘What shape will Baker be in later tonight?’
Woodbridge: After that showing, I’d say Cam’ron’s getting better and better in the ring, and he’ll continue to improve his game. As for Baker, he’s gonna have a couple hours to recuperate before his Tag Title Match tonight, but he took a LOT of punishment in this match. Even with a couple hours rest, I don’t think he’ll be at 100% later tonight.
Paisner: Time will tell, ladies and gentlemen. But now, coming up next we have tag team action as Team BS, Buster Braggadocio and Stephen Romero take on Miles Alpha and Dalidus Nova of the Young Cardinals.
Woodbridge: And there’s a lot to say for the partnership between Buster and Romero. They’re two sides of the same coin more or less, both of them proud of their ethnicity and who they are, but there’s a disparity between the attitudes of the two.
Paisner: Nova and Alpha at first glance would seem to be a more cohesive unit, but I wouldn’t dare count Buster and Romero out. If there’s any group who’s insufferable enough to get Romero and Braggadocio on the same page, it’s the Young Cards.
Woodbridge: We’ll send it down to my boy Javier for the introductions!
We cut to Babaganoush, who stands in the ring with the mic.
Javier: The following tag team contest is scheduled for one fall…..
Crowd: ONE FALL!
Javier:......with a 60 Minute Time Limit! Your referee is Ivan Itichicock!
The crowd applauds for Itchicock as he enters the ring. We pan over the crowd as some funky beats begin to play over the sound system.
Javier: Introducing First, From Atlanta, Georgia……….
Crowd: YYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Paisner: Hometown pop!
Javier:...the first half of Team BS: BUUSTTERRR BRAGGAADOOCIIIIOOOOOO!!!!
Crowd: WOOOOOOOO!
Buster saunters through the entrance of the runway without a care in the world. He stops for a moment, turning around to reveal "Straight Outta TEAM BS" sewn onto the back of his vest. It’s clearly his own handy work, with the letters hastily stitched on with the same material as his flashy red pants.
Crowd: WOOOOO!
Crowd: BOOOOO!
He continues down the runway, mostly getting cheers from his hometown…..until he starts accusing fans of being ‘crackers’ regardless of their heritage.
Paisner: Once again Buster has chosen to keep his entrance for this tag team match.
Woodbridge: We all know that Romero and Braggadocio don’t necessarily see eye to eye on everything - but this is looking more and more like a sign that things may not be all sunshine and rainbows.
Paisner: Woodbridge, may I give some professional feedback? As a friend?
Woodbridge: … Yes?
Paisner: Maybe we shouldn’t run straight to the rainbow metaphors when speaking about these two.
Woodbridge: That’s not what I…
Paisner: Because his partner is-
Woodbridge, pinching the bridge of his nose: Yes. Noted, thank you.
The lights dim as another familiar song begins to play throughout the ring.
Javier: And hailing from Sacramento, California, STEEEPPHHENN ROOOMMERRROOOO!
Crowd: RO-MER-O! RO-MER-O!
Romero appears at the end of the runway, playing off of the cheering fans who jump to greet him. He stays friendly, handing out fist bumps along his walk to the ring, but those who look close enough can see that he isn’t feeling as confident as usual.
He steps into the ring and hops up onto the turnbuckles, running a hand through his hair before raising a fist to the crowd. After returning to his corner, he looks expectantly to the top of the runway just in time for the lights to dim once again.
PA: GO!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOO
Dalidus Nova and Miles Alpha walk out wearing matching military jackets with the canadian flag stitched onto the arms
Javier: And their opponents, representing The Vanguard. At a combined weight of 415 pounds, The YOOOOOOOOUNG CARDINALS, MILES ALPHA AND DALIDUUUUUS NOOOOVA!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOO!
Paisner: The former tag team champs have had issues with the newly formed Team BS for a few months now.
Woodbridge: Yes, but despite being a team for years, they might not be fully on the same page either, as Joey McCarty has been busy with individual championship pursuits to help his fellow Cardinals tonight.
The Cardinals walk straight to the ring, ignoring the fans and staring down Romero and Braggadocio. The two Cardinals step into the ring, Alpha subtly bopping his head to the music, as the two hand their jackets to Chondon. Their music starts to fade away, and both teams get ready in their respective corners. Itchicock confirms both teams are ready, and calls for the opening bell!
DING DING DING
As the bell sounds, Romero and Nova stare one another down, before both charging from out the corner! Romero swinging out with a lariat, an action Nova seems to have anticipated as he quickly gets slow to slide under and in between Romero’s legs to get behind him! Nova quickly rises and jumps up to deliver a dropkick to Romero’s back! Sending Romero stumbling towards the ropes, as Alpha runs over to the center of the apron to try and catch Romero with a kick to the head from the outside! But Romero manages to duck his head under, as he turns around, and sees a charging Nova coming right for him! Romero sidesteps just as Nova goes for a superkick, Nova nearly kicking Alpha, but Alpha reacting fast enough to catch Nova’s leg, and try to turn it right back around into their favor as he spins Nova by the leg to try and get him to catch Romero in the head with it! But Romero ducks straight under it! Then rises up to clock Nova on the jaw with a stiff forearm strike! Sending Nova stumbling back and onto a knee, as Alpha tries to run over to near Romero and swing with his own strike, but Romero catches him with a back elbow! Dropping Alpha to his ass on the apron!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Paisner: The Cardinals managing to avoid taking each other out, and hell, nearly turning back around a potentially bad situation into getting one over on Romero, but Romero with incredible awareness and timing with his moves! Subduing both cardinals!
Nova has groggily gotten up and backed themselves up into a corner, which Romero turns his head to see, and charges at Nova with a clothesline in the corner! Sending Nova sinking down in the corner! Romero then grabs Nova and brings him back up, before heading to the opposite corner, and rushing back with a second clothesline! This one knocking the air out of Nova, as he falls to a seated position in the corner!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Romero has a confident look on his face, as he grabs a hurt Nova, struggling to get air into his body, then just biel tosses him across near all the way across the ring! Nova landing right near the opposite corner!
Crowd: WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Woodbridge: The absurd strength of this man! That’s over 220 pounds tossed like it’s nothing!
Nova is loopy in the corner, grabbing the ropes, and slowly pulling himself up. Eventually making his way up to his feet, as Romero goes to rush towards him again!.....but Nova slips himself through the ropes, then flicks himself up to connect with a pendulum kick to the head of Romero! Stunning him in the center of the ring! Nova then steps back into the ring, taking a moment to catch his breath, before running towards Romero, then jumping up with an enziguri to Romero’s head! Sending Romero a bit wobbly on his feet!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Nova then grabs the wobbly Romero, and tosses him into his tag corner, where we see a now-recovered Alpha standing up. Nova tags in Alpha, as Romero in the corner tries to quickly grab Nova and strike Nova away, but Alpha strikes Romero in the head from behind to stun him, and stop him! Nova begins to lay in hard kicks to Romero’s midsection as Alpha then steps into the ring, where he joins in with the kicks to the midsection! Romero sinking down in the corner as The Cardinals send kick after kick into his chest! Before the two link arms, as Alpha whips Nova towards the center of the ring, before Nova turning himself to whip Alpha even closer to the center, before Nova then sends Alpha running back towards Romero! Alpha sent at a high speed as he jumps up with a hesitation dropkick to the face of Romero! Leaving him completely seated and loopy in the corner!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Woodbridge: Young Cardinals seeking to do what they do best, on point teamwork learned from years of experience not only as just general tag wrestlers, but with each other specifically. Buster and Romero may know the tag ring very well, but they can’t compete with how well Nova and Alpha know each other specifically.
Nova then heads over to the apron, as Alpha walks towards Romero, and goes to press his boot into Romero’s neck! Romero grabs onto Alpha’s legs, and goes to pry him off quickly, but Alpha drops down to dropkick Romero’s face to re-stun him, before getting up and extending his leg out again to successfully press it into Romero’s neck and choke him out!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
All the air is pressed out of Romero, as he struggles around while Alpha applies the choke. Itchicock eventually begins to count Alpha off, who breaks only right before the 5 count!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Alpha smirks at his work, Romero holding at his neck on the ground, struggling to breath, as Alpha then just begins to lightly tap at Romero’s head with his boot!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Paisner: And now just palpable disrespect from Alpha! Taunting Romero on the ground!
Alpha keeps booting the head of Romero, yelling out taunting remark after taunting remark as Romero begins to push himself up against it. Romero gets to a knee, as eventually Alpha switches to doing something more legit harmful, as he shoots down forearm strikes into the head of Romero! Sending a hard one right down into Romero, but Romero moves through and continues to rise up! Alpha then strikes with another rough forearm to Romero, but still Romero is not deterred! Alpha beginning to panic, starts striking rapidly with the forearms, looking to subdue Romero with an absolute onslaught of forearms, but eventually, Romero forcefully pushes himself up and breaks through! Alpha is sent flying across the ring, falling on his ass, as he scrambles to his feet and rushes back at Romero to try and re-take advantage, but runs right into Romero tossing out an open palm chop! Impacting Alpha’s chest hard, and flooring him right to the ground!
Crowd: YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Alpha writhes around on the mat! Moaning in pain, clutching at his chest, now left with a big red spot in the middle, as Romero then lets out a roar!
Crowd: WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Romero then takes a moment to catch his breath and collect himself, before he then sizes Alpha down, and goes to run the ropes!.....but gets caught with a kick in the back from Nova as he hits them!
Crowd: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Romero tenses up for a moment, before he goes to turn around to strike Nova off of the apron! But Nova ducks under the elbow Romero throws at him, and grabs his head to pull Romero down into the ropes to whiplash his face off of them!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Woodbridge: Romero trying to come back, but the Cardinals sneaky tactics quickly cutting him right back off! Excellent work from Nova!
Romero is sent back from the ropes, holding at his face as he falls to a knee. While we see Alpha beginning to stir from the chop he had just taken. Romero begins to try and rise from his knee, but Alpha runs in with a dropkick to the back of Romero’s head! Forcing him back to the ground!
Crowd: OHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Alpha then grabs Romero, and does his best to try and bring Romero up, but the significant weight difference makes it a struggle. So instead, he works from the position he has. Dropping Romero and allowing him to hit the mat, before applying a rear chinlock to the larger man.
Paisner And now Alpha trying to ground the big man, wear down Romero. And this can not only take even more energy out of Romero than has also been took, but also drain the morale of Buster to try and get Romero back into it!
Alpha grinds in on the chinlock, getting low to the ground as possible to sink out as much as he can from Romero. Romero tries to power up, but Alpha is quicker, and delivers an elbow strike to the shoulder and neck that drops Romero back to the mat.
Buster: COME ON STEVE! THE hWHITE MAN CAN’T CONTINUE TO GRIND US DOWN LIKE THIS!

2020.10.17 17:30 Watchdogs66 Our "Drive to 245": The Twenty-Fifth Step (Second Quarter)

The Drive To 245: Deprive the GOP In 25

In 2014 and with 234 House seats, the NRCC launched the “Drive to 245” campaign for the 2014 midterms, which focused on securing 245 seats for the 114th Congress. At the close of the midterms, they ended up picking up 13 seats, putting their new majority to 247 seats, 2 seats above the goal. For the majority of this election cycle, we had at least 234 House seats to start with, until a turncoat in disguise switched to the GOP in December 2019 (get fucked Jeff Van Drew) and we lost one of our districts in a May 2020 special election (get your act together Christy Smith). Despite these setbacks, getting to 245 seats in the next election is possible for us to achieve, if we are smart about it.

In late November 2018, I began by compiling an initial list of 25 potential districts that could give us the necessary gains for us to make the necessary net gain of 10 seats to fulfill our “Drive to 245” campaign goal. I then outlined the state representatives and state senators that we have on our side that live within (or at least represent a good portion of) the identified districts in the second step, which was split into parts one and two. These local officials are often our first line of offense when it comes to selecting appropriate candidates to flip GOP congressional districts, as these people often start out with significant amounts of name recognition (at least compared to most political novices), developed campaign infrastructures, and established donor networks to draw on. In the third step, I explored four different ways that these state representatives and state senators can help promising candidates build a solid platform to flip these 25 districts, even if we are not able to recruit any of these seasoned individuals themselves. I then proceeded to identify every individual local county Democratic organization within in each of these 25 districts to determine how much of a viable network exists towards flipping any of these districts, and whether any of them appear to be fledgling and underfunded, which was split into parts one, two, and three. I then proceeded to draw up rough battle plans to recruit the best candidates that are suitable towards making the necessary gains for the proposed 245 House seats, which I covered in parts one, two, and three. Since then, I updated my list of 25 districts to better reflect the developments that have occurred since November 2018, as well as the candidates from our end that have filed in those districts. After that, I covered updated game plans for the updated 25 districts, which was again split into parts one, two, and three. Another comprehensive update to the list was conducted in early July to account for the GOP retirements, lack of Democratic candidate recruitment for several districts, and other remarkable events that have occurred, all of which have been documented in said update. From there, more detailed plans were made that illustrated the overall status of the Democratic campaigns for each of these districts, which can be found in parts one, two, three, and four. These plans also highlighted which candidates appeared to have the most organized campaigns for each district, and which ones out of these strongest candidates needed the most assistance in terms of fundraising. Donation plans were also made that could sufficiently help out these struggling candidates, if every active user of this subreddit took part. After that, I provided a detailed plan for defending our 5 most endangered Democratic incumbents for this cycle. I next discussed the different methods that volunteers can help out a campaign, and what good campaigns should provide in such activities to optimize their voter outreach effectiveness, both of which can be found in parts one and two. In October 2019, I then provided another comprehensive review of the 25 districts that are the most likely to flip blue and the ideal strategies to accomplish that goal, which can be found in parts one, two, three, and four. After that, I provided an update on the overall status of our top 5 most endangered incumbents, and posted a rescue plan to help out the least financially stable campaigns, both of which can be found in this post. My next step provided day-by-day calendars highlighting volunteer events within the targeted 25 districts that helped participants develop vital Democratic infrastructure in those areas. These calendars, which ran from October 31 to January 15, can be found in parts one, two, three, and four. In late January, I gave a third update on the top 5 incumbents to defend this cycle. At the start of February 2020, I gave a fresh analysis of the 25 districts with the best chances of going blue, which are provided in parts one, two, three, and four. I then jumped to a day-by-day calendar of volunteer events of congressional campaigns operating throughout the 25 districts, which was originally planned to be released in four parts. However, the quickly deteriorating COVID-19 situation has forced this series to be suspended halfway through this step. The two calendars provided in this step, which ran from February 7 to March 19, can be found here and here. In April 2020, I provided an updated study of the 25 districts with the highest chances of flipping as well as the optimal strategies for each of these districts, which was delivered in parts one, two, three, and four. Later in May 2020, I provided another update on the top 5 incumbents to defend this cycle and their performances. I subsequently proceeded in June 2020 to provide a list of the competitive state house and state senate districts that overlapped one of the 30 congressional districts that this series targeted or defended, which was delivered in parts one, two, three, and four. Starting in late July 2020, I provided an updated perspective of the 25 districts with the highest chances of flipping as well as the optimal strategies for each of these districts, all of which were provided in parts one, two, three, and four. Shortly thereafter in August 2020, I provided a fresh update on the campaign status of the top 5 incumbents to defend this cycle. From there, I supplied a fresh view on the status of our campaigns in competitive state house and state senate districts that overlapped one of the 30 congressional districts that was targeted or defended by this series, which was given in parts one, two, three, and four. Next, I provided a calendar highlighting the important dates for the congressional campaigns operating within the 30 districts targeted and defended by this series.

This step will provide a final comprehensive review for each of the 25 districts that this series is targeting in the 2020 elections. As of now, the Democratic nominees have been selected for each target district. This review’s main objective is to gauge the progress of each nominee’s general election campaign. During the months that have transpired from the series’ last comprehensive review, excellent overall progress has been made in the target districts, which currently cover regions located throughout fifteen states. These districts are sorted by state, then ordered by priority, which is roughly based on factors such as whether there is an important up-ballot statewide race (Presidential or Senate) to support, the overall flippability of the districts in question, how soon within the 2020 cycle Democratic organization began within these relevant areas, and the overall quality of the Democratic nominees. Given the overall length of these strategies, this step will be split into four quarters. In the first quarter of this step, game plans were elaborated for districts located in Georgia, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
This second quarter will go over the best strategies to follow for districts situated in Texas, Ohio, New York, and Virginia. For each district, the nominee’s campaign website, the amount of money he or she has raised so far according to the 2020 Q3 reports, and their campaign donation page will be listed. The fundraising numbers of the GOP opponent and an analysis of the Democratic nominee’s campaign will also be provided.
Some nominees are indicated with a minus or a plus, which indicates the overall quality of their campaign websites according to criteria that was listed in the second half of the eleventh step of this series. If a hash symbol (#) is indicated next to a candidate’s fundraising haul, it means that the figure was taken from the raw 2020 Q3 electronic filings for the candidate’s campaign committee. Fundraising figures from raw filings are not always up to date, meaning that they should be treated with caution. All districts listed on this post have their PVI and the bluest rating given by the political pundits at the time of this writing.

TX-10 (Michael McCaul, R+9, Lean R):
Democratic Nominee: Mike Siegel (+) Fundraising Numbers: $1,953,616 Campaign Website: https://siegelfortexas.org/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/siegel-for-congress
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Michael McCaul: $3,334,483
Mike Siegel is still running behind the GOP incumbent, Michael McCaul, in terms of fundraising. What further complicates things is that Mike Siegel came off of a lengthy runoff that shortened his general election campaign time, leaving him behind Michael McCaul in the latest polls for this district. However, his campaign website is pretty well organized in recruiting volunteers, and he is actively reaching out to help voters that have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Additionally, we do have some promising signs that the district could flip our way, as recent reports have indicated that Democratic efforts in Colorado County have improved, with the Democratic county party there having secured more footholds and support than it did in August 2019. The priority right now is to improve voter outreach in several high impact counties that the district at least partially covers. For starters, Harris and Travis Counties are critical areas to organize, as both of these counties overlap with multiple districts that are covered in this series. Harris County has covers parts of TX-22, while Travis County covers areas of TX-21, and volunteering in those areas would help us flip multiple districts in Texas for the same amount of effort. Efforts in Lee and Waller Counties should also get some sizable assistance as the local Democratic parties in these areas continue to be underfunded (or at least lacking in the latest web design).
TX-21 (Chip Roy, R+10, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Wendy Davis (+) Fundraising Numbers: $7,809,356 Campaign Website: https://www.wendydavisforcongress.com Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/dav_website
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Chip Roy: $4,186,407
Wendy Davis has continued to raise obscene sums of money over the past several months, and is vastly outraising the GOP incumbent Chip Roy. Her website is pretty well organized with respect to recruiting volunteers, and she was a former state senator, so she definitely has gone full speed ahead with her campaign. However, the latest polls for this district show her slightly behind Chip Roy. Still, I am rather keen to see if she can kick out Chip Roy, who definitely needs to go because of his efforts to continuously block various bipartisan efforts such as disaster aid and the coronavirus response bill. Oh, and his stunts that he pulled in the name of supporting the House Freedom Caucus is just horrible. Like TX-10, the district has several high impact counties where we should step up our organization. Bexar and Travis Counties cover regions in TX-23 and TX-10 respectively, making them ideal for improving our odds in multiple districts for the same amount of work. Organization should also focus on Bandera and Real Counties, as the Democratic county party organizations are underfunded and could use some grassroots support.
TX-22 (OPEN, R+10, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Sri Preston Kulkarni (+) Fundraising Numbers: $4,671,339 (#) Campaign Website: https://sri2020.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/kulkarniforcongress
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Troy Nehls: $1,343,215
Sri Preston Kulkarni’s campaign is definitely a lot more professional this time around. For one, his website has a well-organized place for potential volunteers to sign up. For another, his campaign is getting volunteers to reach out to voters in over 15 languages, which is really helpful in bringing out the Asian vote at record levels, which is necessary to improve our margins in the Sugar Land area. There is also the fact that the GOP nominee, Troy Nehls, is drained of resources from the expensive runoff, which gives Sri Preston Kulkarni a head start in the general election. And finally, Sri Preston Kulkarni is tied with Troy Nehls in the latest polls for this district. I once again stress the importance of Harris County, as it also covers parts of TX-10, giving us the benefit of improving our chances in flipping two districts for the price of organizing in one county.
TX-23 (OPEN, R+1, Lean D):
Democratic Nominee: Gina Ortiz Jones (-) Fundraising Numbers: $5,754,382 Campaign Website: https://ginaortizjones.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/ginaortizjones
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Tony Gonzales: $1,160,880
Gina Ortiz Jones is continuing to raise huge sums of money for her campaign. This is perhaps the easiest pickup on our end for this cycle, if we do not count those from the North Carolina redistricting victories. The main focus for this district is to volunteer and improve our voter outreach as much as possible. Local reports say that infrastructure in El Paso County and Maverick County have improved since January 2019. However, every other county in the district except Bexar County (which should also be focused on to provide additional support for TX-21) and Medina County has an underfunded Democratic county party, meaning that grassroots efforts are heavily needed to revitalize these corresponding areas. An additional factor in our favor is that the GOP nominee, Tony Gonzales, got off of a bloody recount that has drained him of resources and campaign time. As a result of all of this, Gina Ortiz Jones has established a clear lead over Tony Gonzales in the most recent polls for this district. So provided that we can focus our grassroots efforts in the areas where the infrastructure is weak, the district should turn blue this time around.
TX-24 (OPEN, R+9, Lean D):
Democratic Nominee: Candace Valenzuela Fundraising Numbers: $3,561,892 Campaign Website: https://candacefor24.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/cd24
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Beth Van Duyne: $2,648,410
Candace Valenzuela is now significantly outraising the GOP candidate Beth Van Duyne. That in itself is a small yet notable victory, considering that Beth Van Duyne is one of the GOP candidates that the national Republicans are pushing hard for, as she is branding herself as one of the members of the “Conservative Squad”, who was highly touted by Fox News in late 2019. Candace Valenzuela is running neck and neck with Beth Van Duyne, according to the latest polls conducted for this district. Finally, Candace Valenzuela is widely viewed to be on the progressive wing of the Democratic challengers that have been nominated this cycle. All of this means that turning out the Democratic base is the top priority here, as this particular race will be one of the most nationalized congressional elections in this year’s cycle.
OH-01 (Steve Chabot, R+5, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Kate Schroder (-) Fundraising Numbers: $3,173,089 Campaign Website: https://www.kateforcongress.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/k4c-site
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Steve Chabot: $2,717,307
This particular race has significantly moved our way, as Kate Schroder is now outraising the GOP incumbent Steve Chabot. The most recent polls in this district have indicated that the race is now a dead heat. There’s also the fact that Steve Chabot’s former campaign consultant has been under investigation since last year for stealing campaign funds, which has given us more openings for this particular district. However, Kate Schroder’s volunteer page has declined in quality since it now redirects to her campaign’s MoblizeAmerica page, which is far less professional in signing up volunteers, in my opinion. At this point, the main objective for Kate Schroder is to continue to increase her name recognition and inform the electorate about her background, as an early DCCC general election poll indicated that voters were more likely to support Kate Schroder if she did so.
NY-01 (Lee Zeldin, R+5, Lean R):
Democratic Nominee: Nancy Goroff (+) Fundraising Numbers: $5,400,156 Campaign Website: https://www.goroffforcongress.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/goroff-website
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Lee Zeldin: $7,065,195
This district is certainly going to be very expensive to compete in, as Nancy Goroff has raised a very sizable seven-figure sum. However, she is still behind the GOP incumbent, Lee Zeldin, by over $1.7 million in fundraising, although that gap has slightly closed since the last comprehensive review. Recent polls suggest that Lee Zeldin still has a clear advantage, although it is certainly in the single digits. Local reports say that the Democrats in that particular district have quickly united against Lee Zeldin and directed appropriate support and voter outreach in the areas that are receptive to Nancy Goroff’s messaging. Nancy Goroff’s volunteer page has also improved over the past several months, as it now includes a space listing specific activities that potential volunteers can choose to engage in. Suffolk County is a very important county to concentrate voter outreach efforts on, as it overlaps with NY-02.
NY-02 (OPEN, R+3, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Jacqueline Gordon Fundraising Numbers: $3,550,230 Campaign Website: https://jackiegordonforcongress.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/jackiegordonsite
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Andrew Garbarino: $1,260,624
This race has a surprisingly high victory potential for us. Jacqueline Gordon has a lot of potential as a Babylon Town Councilmember, a veteran, and a woman of color, meaning that she possesses a strong ability to turn out the minority vote as well as well-established political connections. Her GOP opponent, Andrew Garbarino, is experienced some slight delays in getting his campaign off the ground due to his state Assembly duties as well as some coordination issues with Peter King, the district’s current (and retiring) GOP incumbent. Garbarino’s kickoff did not start until August, which gave us a slight head start in making our case to the district’s voters. Another advantage that we have is that Jacqueline Gordon is currently blowing away Andrew Garbarino in the fundraising department. However, her campaign volunteer page has slightly deteriorated over the past several months, as it connects potential volunteers to her MoblizeAmerica page, which is less efficient in signing up potential volunteers, in my opinion. I would like to repeat the emphasis that efforts should be made to organize in Suffolk County, since that county also covers parts of NY-01.
NY-24 (John Katko, D+3, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Dana Balter Fundraising Numbers: $2,443,168 Campaign Website: https://electdanabalter.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/balter-website
GOP Fundraising Numbers: John Katko: $3,329,771
Dana Balter is still being outraised by the GOP incumbent, John Katko, although the cumulative fundraising gap has slightly closed since the series’ last comprehensive review. The volunteer page on her campaign website has also slightly deteriorated since then, as it also now connects to a customized MobilizeAmerica webpage, which is less efficient in signing up potential volunteers, in my opinion. However, Democratic internal polling shows that Dana Balter is currently running close with John Katko. In this particular Democrat-leaning district, voter persuasion is going to be very important, as there are thousands of voters in this district who are currently plan to split the ticket between Joe Biden and John Katko in November. This finding, which has been confirmed in several polls conducted for this district, means that we should focus our voter persuasion efforts in Auburn, Syracuse, and Skaneateles, as that is where most of these split-ticket voters are located in. Additional outreach efforts should also be concentrated on strengthening our base in Cayuga County, as the local Democratic party there is relatively weak in funding.
VA-05 (OPEN, R+6, Tossup):
Democratic Nominee: Bryant Cameron Webb (+) Fundraising Numbers: $4,077,969 Campaign Website: https://www.drcameronwebb.com/ Donation Page: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/cameronwebb
GOP Fundraising Numbers: Robert Good: $984,809
Oh boy, has this race quickly received a lot of recent attention, as all of the stars seem to be aligning in this particular race. First of all, there is a divided GOP electorate from the nominating convention that ejected the district’s incumbent, Denver Riggleman, from the nomination. Next, Bryant Cameron Webb has some serious potential of supercharging the minority vote in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Then, Robert Good, the GOP candidate, is at a serious disadvantage when it comes to fundraising, as his cumulative fundraising figures remain much lower than Bryant Cameron Webb’s are. Also, the most recent polling for this district indicates that Bryant Cameron Webb is running very close to Robert Good. Finally, recent reports say that the Democratic infrastructure in Appomattox and Campbell Counties have improved since January 2019. Our primary goal in this district should be to increase our voter outreach efforts, as quite a few Democratic county parties are underfunded and in need of grassroots support. These counties are Brunswick, Buckingham, Cumberland, Danville City, Halifax, Lunenburg, and Prince Edward Counties. Needless to say, there is a lot of work cut out for us to flip a solid red district that voted for Corey Stewart in 2018.

And thus we come the end of this step’s second quarter. The third quarter will describe ideal procedures for flipping target districts in Illinois, Florida, Indiana, and California. After that, the final quarter will cover optimized tactics for districts within New Jersey, Colorado, Nebraska, and Montana. So stay tuned! Any corrections or comments are welcome.

2020.10.14 21:42 StormyWeather15 Passing the FE Civil - My experience coming from Canada (May - October, 2020)

Hello everyone. let me just say THANK YOU SO MUCH to all the people of this reddit page for everything posted. There is so much valuable material and advice that can be found here. I would not have been able to pass the FE Exam without you! Also thank you so much to the STEM Discord group for helping me with a billion questions as well as all the active people who posted questions that helped me study for the test. YOU ALL ROCK!
(this is going to be a long post so feel free to just skip to "studying for the exam" if you want to know what studying stuff/resources I used)
BACKGROUND
I found out around February 2020 that I was going to be hired by a company I had been dying to work for in the same city as my S.O. in the USA once I finished school with a tentative start of June 1st dependent on COVID impacts. March 16th UBC told their students the rest of the semester would be online and that if we wished to leave we could. March 17th I left for Utah to be with my S.O. March 26th I received my official offer letter from the company. I finished up my university courses and was done finals April 25. I told my company that I could start earlier since I wasn't doing much given COVID restrictions and I started May 19th, 2020. About then was when I began to study for the FE exam and get my documents together since I had Canadian education and I needed to make sure I qualified etc. Thankfully my state of Utah doesn't require education verification for those coming from CAEB accredited universities (pretty sure they know Canadians are the best!). My employer also requested I get my FE exam done ASAP with a good salary increase incentive, so I had a lot of motivation to be successful. It took until August before I was able to even schedule my exam at which point October 6th was the soonest appointment I could make. So studying continued right until October 6th but I took weekends to myself and mostly was able to study while at work when it was slow. I also was finishing my work too fast so I would often add an hour or so of studying once done before I submitted my work. My boss was ok with me doing this since he didn't have anymore work to give me anyways. Come September that is when I stopped having "fun" weekends and I spent each weekend studying and doing mock exams right until I took my exam October 6th. October 14th I checked at 10:01 am eastern time and found out I passed. It was a stressful week waiting for the results and I had no idea if I would pass or fail. I felt neutral coming out of the exam, neither terrible nor amazing. I did my best and hoped it was good enough.

STUDYING FOR THE EXAM
(Resources used are in bold and italicized)
To start studying I basically looked all over the internet for free resources to start. I read a ton a reddit posts and then I found the discord group where I found other people who were willing to share resources they found. Given I had no real idea what the FE was since I was from Canada, reading these posts, ones like this, was very helpful and got me prepared. I downloaded the manual and looked over the different categories and was happy to know my university, while not preparing me to take the FE because in Canada we have a set curriculum among all universities and once you graduate you become an EIT after registering with the regulating body (no technical exam), had prepared me well and I felt I was already one step ahead because I knew quite a bit of the listed topics. It was really just a matter of refreshing myself on the specifics of the topics.
The first book I used to study was FE Civil Review with 800 Solved Problems by M.R. Islam. It has a ton of questions in all the categories that I used as a starting point to become familiar with what things I would be tested on. I found they had decent questions (yes a few errors like all textbooks) and good explanations most of the time. It was a great starter book! I did every question in that book. When I got to a topic I didn't really know, I would watch the Marshall University videos on YouTube relating to that topic as well as the Georgia Tech Coursera videos. In the end I watched all the YouTube and Coursera videos and did every question in their videos as well. I had the Coursera quiz answers from googling online so I didn't have to pay $50 for them.
Being part of the STEM Discord introduced me to Girum S. Urgessa, the author of FE-Civil Practice Questions with Detailed Solutions. I bought his book for $40 on Amazon and worked through the first 110 questions as a form of studying more practice questions (PS if you want the book $25 and I will mail it to you as I no longer need mine. I didn't write in it and was very careful to not even bend pages). They are a good set of questions and reasonably on par with the difficulty of the questions in the real exam. He was available on Discord to help when we had questions both with his book and with other random stuff too. The second half of the book I left for a September mock exam because it was designed to be used as a mock exam. It was my first mock exam I did and I got 55%. Doing this allowed me to find out which topics I needed to review more so I could be successful on the real thing. There are a few errors in this book, but Girum has an erratum out that is up to date and you can always ask for help in the Discord group or email him.
Once I had completed these 4 sources along with being active in the discord and helping others answer all sorts of questions, I did begin to feel confident.
I completed some of the diagnostic sections out of the book Civil Practice Problems for the Civil Fundamentals of Engineering by Michael Lindeburg, but honestly those are very old and a bit on the difficult side. It was great to look at them and learn from them, but don't get discouraged if you use this resource and feel like nothing makes sense. You could skip it all together and be fine.
I started doing some of the questions from the Perdue Notes (easily findable through google and this reddit page), but found them to be riddled with errors, so while you might want to look at the ethics section and that type of stuff, don't let yourself get hung up on doing every question out of those notes because they kind of suck. I used them mostly to try and study theory things.
I also used School of PE Notes found online and felt those to be reasonably valuable in some topics. The environmental one is NOT GOOD and a waste of time. I used them to supplement in the areas where I was having issues such as surveying and transportation.
I had also around August downloaded the app ENGR Prep app on IOS by ENGINPEERS.COM and did some of their quizzes while I was at work when I was bored. They have decent questions and I liked them. You have to watch a short ad, but its free and I liked that. I used it for ethics, math, materials, and economics. It had quality questions and I didn't find any errors myself.
At this point I had two weeks to go till my exam so I spend a weekend doing the NCEES practice exam as a mock exam. I got 74% and studied up on the things I made errors on. I was feeling ready to take the test, but still had days to go and was worried I would start forgetting things so I just kind of watched YouTube videos on different topics.
With a week to my test I was able to get my hands on a few more practice tests where I just went through the questions on them mostly skipping the things I was 100% confident on such as math. It was a great reviewer in the last few days before my exam to just not loose any information. I had the PPE FE exam practice, MO S&T practice, CHAYA Engineering, and Civil Engineering Academy Ultimate Practice Exam. Some of it was redundant but nonetheless helped me.
So in total I used many resources and in the end only spent $45 on studying material. I started at the end of may with a loose schedule just doing things when I could then near the end of august and all of September hunkered down and studied as much as I could. All of this was while I was working full time, mostly in the field with September in the office.
All the material I used can be found through this reddit post:
https://www.reddit.com/FE_Exam/comments/j50n0n/fe_civil_study_material_bank_updated/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
Yes its a weird site but when you follow the instructions it works. I think its on a foreign site to try and protect the person who posted it. I didn't have any issues getting materials from it and have no viruses or anything.

EXAM DAY
My nearest test center was 2 hours away but didn't have appointments until January, so I had to find somewhere else. There were some north of where I live so I picked a test center 4 hours away and we drove up on a Sunday, went to Ikea (because why not!), had dinner and went swimming at the hotel pool. That night I looked over some more notes I had just from the above resources and tried to sleep as best I could given my nerves. The next day, Monday, we just toured around national forest and enjoyed the fall colors in the mountains. It was a peaceful day. For dinner we had sushi (looking back probably should have picked something less risky hahaha) which was yummy and then went back to the hotel to rest up before my exam. Again I looked over some notes and whatnot, but nothing major. I woke up Tuesday at 6am, went and got a sandwich from the grocery store to bring with me and a banana. I was at the test center at 7am to see if I could start my test early since it was scheduled for 8am. Unfortunately the people didn't arrive till 7:30 to set up so I waited till 8 in my car and then headed back in.
When I got into the office I was asked if I washed my hands which I had because I went to the bathroom before I started. If you didn't you were made to go wash your hands in the bathroom. I was then told to take a number and given some papers that just went over NCEES rules and some info about how to use the reference manual on the computer. NOTE: it is different than using adobe pdf reader. There is a video online about it, google it and watch it so you have an idea. It is a bit slower than that I was used to, but it wasn't hard to use. You have to be quite specific and familiar with the book because sometimes symbols like % are not recognized so GET TO KNOW THE MANUL! While waiting I took a sip of water and had a caffeine pill (only do this if you are used to caffeine pills because otherwise you might have issues). Once my number was called I went to the counter, gave her my ID, used hand sanitizer, did a palm scan, took a picture where they ask you to pull your mask down around your chin for 5 seconds, and then was told to turn off my phone and put everything in a locker except to keep my ID and the locker key. I went around a corner from the waiting area to where I would be taking my test. They looked at my id, made me pat myself down, show my pockets, spin around to show my back, made me sanitize my hand again for a palm scan, and then I was brought to my computer where they logged into it and told me to press start whenever I wanted to go. They also said if I need anything raise my hand and they will come over to me and if I hold up the pen or the booklet they would bring another. I took some deep breaths and then began. It started with the NDA where you just agree and continue and then a tutorial that told you how the questions would come up on the screen and how to use the reference manual and how flagging works. It was easy enough. Then I started the test just like that and worked through everything. I once asked to use the bathroom which took about 5 minutes total to get scanned out and scanned back in once I returned. I finished the first half of the exam on the half way point taking a loss on maybe 5 questions because I wanted enough time to do the second half. I then had a break where I ate and took another caffeine pill just before I went back in. During my break I also walked around a little to try and dissipate my test adrenaline that I always get. I went back in with the same pat down / palm scan and started the second part. Make sure you ask for a new book when you are starting part 2 because the first book is useless given you can't see any of the old questions. I wasted about 5 minutes waiting for a new book. PS: the pen does not erase really unless you use spit which you cant because of masks (also ew) so don't waste space because getting new books is just kind of annoying. The second half of the exam went WAY quicker because there were a lot of fast answer conceptual/theory questions. There were some straightforward plug and chug but overall I just had a lot of either you know it, can educated guess it, or have no idea and pick C. I wish I had spent another 25 minutes on the first half of the exam where I could have probably gotten another point or two, but ya never know! half and half time is a decent method going into the exam. When I finished the exam, I just clicked end, got my stuff, and was signed out with a palm scan. I then went to the waiting area, was given a paper saying I finished the test, got my belongings, and then left. I felt very neutral coming out - neither disastrous nor amazing. I was happy it was over. I was pretty alert at the end too and did not feel mentally exhausted thankfully as I was worried I would be grouchy on the drive home. I think my caffeine strategy worked for me. I stayed up the entire 4 hour drive back home and when I did get home, didn't take long falling asleep.
There were a few questions on my exam that I just had absolutely no idea - maybe 5. 2 or 3 questions just seemed crazy and out of the blue. Probably 10-15 others I was able to made educated guesses by eliminated some choices. I think I had 3-4 where I had to type a number (alternative) and 1 multiple option question. I did not like typing in numbers because it did not say how many sig figs to use. I stuck to using 2 decimals unless it was like 1.9 then I just did a whole number 2.

WAITING FOR RESULTS
The wait for results was horrible. I slept poorly because my brain just started overthinking every answer I made. The more time that passed, the more I felt like I wasn't going to pass by just 1 or 2 points and be devastated. I had a terrible weekend because I just felt lost and didn't know what to even do with myself. My S.O. pulled me out of the house to go on a drive and walk in some nature to try and get my back to normal and it did help. Work picked up so I was able to busy myself in that which helped too.
Finally the time came this morning 10:01 am eastern time I logged in while I was doing my morning walk and saw the green pass. I was filled with relief and did a little jump. I teared up a bit because I was so happy it was over after thinking I was surely going to fail. Unfortunately I have no real advice for the wait. I guess just try to keep yourself as busy as possible so time flies. Either work a lot or exercise a lot maybe to help with the stress.
Also know if you fail, you will be able to take it again and redeem yourself, so don't be too hard on yourself. I had already planned I was going to do a 3 month subscription to PPI if I had failed and make sure every night for 2 hours to be on the website working, but I passed so I don't have to do that. It did give me peace of mind knowing I had a plan if I needed to retake it.

If you made it this far, bravo. I hope by sharing my experience, I can help others who are trying to take the exam. Do your very best and you should get favorable results! If you have any other questions, I would be happy to try and help!

2020.10.13 12:44 Lovemuffin12 Do any of you know anything about the South Carolina Naval Militia?

So I'm not actually from South Carolina I live across the Savannah River in Georgia but I'm doing a project on South Carolina and I'm on the military aspects of the state right now. I've managed to find everything I need for the Army and Air National Guards and the State Guard but I cannot find anything on the Naval Militia.
I have looked everywhere but I cannot find a single thing on it. I've checked Wikipedia and dozens of other websites but I can't find anything other than that the Naval Militia was reestablished in 2003 and before being abolished participated in the Spanish-American War.
The only thing that actually goes into detail about the Naval Militia that I have found is correspondence between General J. W. Floyd who was the Adjutant and Inspector General of South Carolina during the Spanish-American War and R.H. Pinckney who was Commander of the South Carolina Naval Militia during the Spanish-American War.
Which doesn't really help because I need up to date statistics on the Naval Militia. I've even checked the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division's website which I believe is the department that the Naval Militia is under and the most useful thing I got from that website is that it didn't state that Nikki Haley was Commander-in-Chief which half the other sites did.
I originally posted this to southcarolina but that didn't help. So I was wondering if anyone in this sub had heard of the South Carolina naval militia or if it's just an organization that exists on paper only.

2020.10.07 04:40 ThatDamnLolicon Looking back Almost 6 Months ago.

I can't give an exact date when manga dex started shitting itself on what seems to be daily as of late. I can however say It all started going downhill around 6 months ago. Manga rock died, A flood of new people can to mangadex and within 2 months the server was overwhelmed to the point that new servers increased bandwidth blah blah blah, Then the next big thing was improved bandwidth measures yadda yadda about 2 months after that....And then kissmanga ate a big hard one and died too. And here we are today, A site that dies almost every hour for bits and chunks. Lets not even talks about the massive amount of bugs that have crept up over the last 2 months. My favorite of which is the no chapters in your language bug. I just read chapter 1 and can see that chapter 2 is there too. But dear god don't you even dare refresh if pages don't load all images. Your get stranded in no chapters in your language hell. For multiple series that you know have fucking chapters your read just 5 minutes ago....

Yeah. Rant over I guess. Anyways, Upgrades are Needed again it seems and this time Please dear god shoot for the moon. I can already see 2 more fairly big sites are about the eat the bullet as they have been hit with lots of DMCA takedown notices in the past 3 weeks. Neither site is hiding this fact.

Quick edit: posted from my phone using voice to text, sorry I have a thick thick thick Georgia accent.

2020.10.03 22:53 lc1320 Bartram’s Painted Vulture

If you’ve never seen the King Vulture (S. papa), you’re in for a treat. Looking more like a child’s felt art then a real bird, this new world vulture lives in Central and South America, among tropical lowland forests, near swamps and marshy places, though they have also been observed in the Amazon Rainforest and open savannas and grassland.
https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/news/fun-facts-about-king-vultures (pictures of the Smithsonian’s painted vulture, for your viewing amusement)
The King Vulture is a member of the genus Sarcoramphus, which today contains only the King Vulture, but in the past, had a much wider range. A fossil of the Kern Vulture (S. kernense) was located in Kern County, CA, from the Pliocene era (3.5 to 2.5 million years ago). Another fossil of S. fisheri has been found in the Pleistocene era in Peru. Lastly, fossils of Sarcoramphus vultures have been found in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, dating to the Pliestocene era. It has been theorized that these could have been early King Vultures, or possibly another Sarcoramphus vulture.
The most mysterious member of Sarcoramphus is not the Kern Vulture, or S. fisheri, though little is known about them. Instead, this honor goes to S. sacra, otherwise known as Bartram’s Painted Vulture.
While far less of a household name then his later colleague, John James Audubon, William Bartram was an American botanist, ornithologist, natural historian, and explorer. He is most famous for his book, Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, the Extensive Territories of the Muscogulges or Creek Confederacy, and the Country of the Chactaws. Containing an Account of the Soil and Natural Productions of Those Regions; Together with Observations on the Manners of the Indians, or more commonly Bartram’s Travels. In this book, he chronicled his explorations of the southern British Colonies from 1773 to 1777, and was credited as the first naturalist to penetrate the Florida tropical forests.
In Bartram’s Travels, he described two vultures yet unknown to science. One was the ubiquitous Black Vulture (C. atratus), today widespread from New England down to Chile. The other was the infamous Painted Vulture, alternatively referred to as the Croped Vulture. It was described as having a red crown, yellow bill, gold iris, as well as a yellow, red, and purple neck. The plumage was a white cream, and the tail was white with black tips. Sound familiar?
Bartram observed this bird along the St. John’s River region, and described how it feasted on lizards and snakes killed by fire. The Muscogee Natives (written in Bartram’s Travels as Muscogulges, or the Creeks), were said to create headdresses using the distinctive tail feathers of the bird to carry into battle.
However, while later ornithologists didn’t contest the bird’s description, few included it in their works. Alexander Wilson, a protege of Bartram’s, never visited Florida, and thus never included it in his American Ornithology. Charles Lucien Bonaparte never saw the bird, but he did include a message in his four-volume supplement to Wilson’s American Ornithology that indicated that the King Vulture has been observed in the southern United States. The species was also absent from John James Audubon’s The Birds of America and Ornithological Biography, despite the fact Audubon visited Florida in the 1830’s.
Bartram was not the only ornithologist who mentioned the Painted Vulture. Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot concurred with Bartram’s description of the Painted Vulture as a separate species. Thomas Nuttall mentioned the Painted Vulture in his discussion of the King Vulture. John Cassin also accepted Bartram’s description as valid, and believed the dark tail of the Painted Vulture made it distinct from a King Vulture.
Most importantly, the Painted Vulture was possibly described before Bartram, by Eleazar Albin, in 1734, which Bartram was likely unaware of. He calls his new bird the Warwovwen or Indian Vulture. Both of the descriptions of the birds were very similar, with no major discrepancies.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sarcorhamphus_sacer_Albin.jpg (a drawing of Albin’s Warwovwen, done by Albin himself)
Despite many of these discrepancies, the Painted Vulture was widely thought of as valid throughout the mid-19th century, though its relationship to the King Vulture was widely unknown. But, in 1871, Joel Asaph Allen, the first president of the American Ornithological Society (AOU), described the bird as a “purely mythical species.” Despite collecting intensively along St. John’s River, Allen failed to find the vulture, and likewise believed Bartram was mistaken, or had invented the bird. Considering Allen’s impressive reputation, his remarks found a home among other ornithologists. Charles Maynard suggested that Bartram could have been describing the Northern Caracara, a bird that Bartram had not reported in Florida, despite being collected by Audubon. Arthur Howell was also dismissive of the Painted Vulture, and hypothesized that Bartram either drew on his imagination, or drew a bird described by others in his Birds of Florida. Even today, the AOU does not recognize the Painted Vulture as either an extinct or living bird.
So, what was the Painted Vulture? An invention of Bartram? A mistake? A population of King Vultures in Florida? Or perhaps, a new species?
Bartram’s Invention
While this possibility must be considered, the idea that Bartram invented the Painted Vulture seems unlikely, especially considering Albin’s separate description of his Warwovwen. Bartram describes this bird as “not mentioned in history,” making it unlikely that he knew of Albin’s description. If there were truly two independent accounts of the same bird, it is more likely that the bird exists then two people made up the same bird.
Another possible sighting of the Painted Vulture was a description of a vulture in the collection of Hans Sloane, an Irish naturalist, by George Edwards in 1743. Edwards believes that the bird in the collection was Albin’s Warwovwen, although he describes the tail as wholly black, as supposed to Albin’s description of black tips. The exact origin of the bird is unknown, Edwards is even told the bird comes from the East Indies (Southeast Asia), however he believes that the bird is from the West Indies (Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico).
It is, of course, possible that Albin invented the bird based off the King Vulture, and Edwards misidentified a King Vulture as a Painted Vulture, and Bartram copied Albin’s description, but that seems unlikely at best.
Bartram’s Misidentification
Charles Maynard, a critic of Bartram’s Painted Vulture, suggested that the Painted Vulture could have actually been the Northern Caracara. This bird still exists in Florida, and has been described regularly by other ornithologists, including Audubon. Northern Caracaras have also been seen eating animals killed by fire, like Bartram’s Painted Vulture. Both possess white color at the base of the tail, but outside of that, they differ in almost every respect. Considering Bartram very accurately described the Black Vulture, it seems unlikely that he would be so off in his description of his Painted Vulture. Furthermore, even if he did mistake the Northern Caracara as a vulture, what did Albin see?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_crested_caracara (Pictures of the Northern Caracara)
A King Vulture Family Vacation
Today, the range of the king vulture is exclusively in Central and South America, but historically, it is very possible that they could have once inhabited Florida. The habitat there is not very different from the current habitat of the King Vulture, and while King Vultures have not been described as having white with black-tipped tails, genetic drift of an isolated population could easily describe any discrepancies. Both Albin’s picture and Bartram’s description line very closely with the King vulture, outside of the tail.
Additionally, there have been some suggestions of a Painted Vulture-like bird in other parts of the Southern United States, suggesting their range may be much larger. It is known that King Vultures were once found widely in Mexico, but are now no longer found there, and fossil records suggest that their range could have been much wider.
Antoine-Simon Le Page du Pratz, a historian and naturalist best known for his Histoire de la Louisiane described a “white eagle” in Louisiana, whose feathers were tipped with black, and prized by natives. Many believe that this 1758 description of a “white eagle” was referring to a bird with a hooked beak, although none was specifically mentioned. The only white bird with a hooked bill in the region was the American White Pelican, whose large bill would have made it very distinct from other birds. Not only does this description align closely with the Painted Vulture, the description of use by native tribes also aligns closely with Bartram’s mention of the feathers appearing in native headdresses.
Lastly, a 1906 archaeological find from a prehistorical Moundsville site in Tuscaloosa County, AL, is a limestone bowl recovered in pieces with a stone head resembling the head and neck of a King Vulture - or Painted Vulture. While some have suggested that this bowl could also resemble a wild turkey, and even ardent believers in the Painted Vulture caution making identifications of stylistic animals, there is no contemporary bird species that has both the curved vulturine/raptorial bill and the fleshy lappets of the forehead seen on the animal. Furthermore, while hard to count, the lines on the edge of the tail indicate twelve tail feathers, as opposed to the eighteen tail feathers found on turkeys.
http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/article/m-8023 (the possible Painted Vulture bowl)
S. sacra - A New Species?
Having just made the case for a King Vulture-like bird being found in South America, it is unknown whether this possible bird was a subspecies of a King Vulture, or a separate Sarcoramphus vulture. Classifying animals as different species tends to be more of an art then a science even among animals that still exist, and trying to determine the species of an extinct animal is even harder, especially considering the lack of fossil evidence. It is entirely possible that the Painted Vulture found by Bartram in Florida, and possibly extending across the Southeast United States was a related but separate species from the King Vulture.
What Happened to the Vulture?
After about 1800, the vulture has not been observed by any ornithologist. The next extensive ornithological study of the region was Audubon’s study in the early 1830’s, when the bird was not located by Audubon, although Thomas Nuttall reported secondhand accounts of it along the Gulf Coast in 1832. This leaves over 50 years for the bird to have gone extinct. Bartram also never commented on the abundance of the birds, so it is possible that they could have been on the decline when sighted by Bartram. America has lost many birds since this time, including the Passenger Pigeon, and the Carolina Parakeet, so the extinction of a species (or subspecies) of birds in America is certainly not unheard of. Bartram described them as easy to kill when gathered by fires, and their feathers were highly in demand as ceremonial objects. The cold weather of 1835 had also been cited as a possible extinction event for these birds.
So, what was the Painted Vulture? An invention of Bartram’s, influenced by earlier ornithologists? A King Vulture subspecies once spread across the southeastern United States, or a separate Sarcoramphus species. Perhaps, most fancifully, some imagine this funny-looking bird still exists, in the sparsely populated tropical forests that still remain in Florida, waiting for someone to stumble across them and wonder what preschool brought their crafts to life.

2020.10.01 15:39 ninja_poseidon Entering France as a US citizen?

Hi- sorry if this has been asked already! I'm moving to France with my spouse and infant (through work) and I'm trying to find out if my parents will be able to visit. According to the COVID restrictions here,
"If you are arriving from a country on the list below, you can enter metropolitan France without any COVID-19 restrictions.
Member States of the European Union, Andorra, Australia, Canada, Georgia, the Holy See, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Rwanda, San Marino, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand, Tunisia, the United Kingdom and Uruguay."
All the other government sites say about the same-- I'm trying to figure out if this means a US citizen could travel to the UK (or Korea, or Japan, etc.), quarantine for 14 days (or not, depending on that country's restrictions) and then come to France. Does anyone have any experience with this? Planning to call the embassy once the dates get closer but wanted to see if it was even a possibility.
Merci Beaucoup!
